Hi-vis top-shot??

I decided to try using hi-vis line on my out/center riggers rods this season. I do not need to replace all the line on my reels as it is only a year or so old. I figure a top shot of hi-vis is the way to go.

Does anyone do this and if so how do you install the line? How many yards of hi-vis/top shot??? What knot do you use to join the two lines??? Ect. ect.

I am thinking of 150-200 yards of hi-vis and a Bimini twist/Albright knot combination to join them.

I have all 50 TW Penn reels spooled with 80lb Ande

Lou

Re: Hi-vis top-shot??

Why would you want a HUGE knot 150-200 yards back in your spool?

You would be far better off to remove the 80lb. mono, (Some shops are able to remove line onto another plastic line spool for you.), and refill the reels with 130lb. hollow spectra. Figure about 600 yards per reel. This will leave plenty of roon for a long topshot of whatever size or color line you wish to fish. Once you learn how to do the connections you will be able to make your own topshots very cheaply and you will save money in the long run by not needing to buy as much mono as often!

The initial cost of the spectra shouldn't be a problem for a guy that can afford a 24' Boston Whaler.

FISH HARD!

Re: Hi-vis top-shot??

Chris,
Thanks for the input, I was just thinking the exact same thing. The hollow spectra or perhaps even dacron would be a better option. I also believe dacron lasts considerably longer than mono. I figured I would connect the two like you would make a wind-on leader.

As far affording the 24' Whaler goes the only way I do it is by being cheap in every non-fishing aspect of my life and I got literally an unbelievable deal!!!!!!

Thanks again,
Lou

Re: Hi-vis top-shot??

Skip the dacron and stick to the 130# spectra. Go with either Izorline or Jerry Brown. Dacron requires cleaning more often and is much thicker than spectra. Spectra can last 10yrs or longer.
