Knife jigs at Colonet

So I'm hopping on the Pac Voyager this weekend and figured that I'd give the knife jigs a try instead of the same ol' yoyo the whole time.

Any tips on how to rig up instead of buying a $1000 worth of shimano butterfly hooha?

I was thinking of stripping the topshot off of my progear 454 and using a short fluoro leader tied uni to uni to the 50# spectra and strapping this on a 700M. Probably also load my Torium 16 with spectra for a backup reel on the same rod.

I know that people suggest a very parabolic rod for these types of jigs but I don't have anything like that.

Any opinions or suggestions?

Re: Knife jigs at Colonet

Just make sure the knife jigs are heavy enough so they don't foul up everyone elses line. On the last trip to Colnett, one guy was using those and his jig was too light to where his spectra was fouling alot of folks line. Seems like your set-up will work for you though! Good luck Charles! Oh, and if Mark hits the spot where we slayed the reds, known as Bubba's Hole, you will be blown away how thick they are there!

The jigs that I got are 7oz which is heavier than the salas 6x that I normally use. Only way I'm gonna get fouled is if someone isn't watching THEIR line and they scope out over me

I really like the knife jigs and I fish them on my 8' Calstar WC-6480 with a Torium 20. I'm running 65lb spectra with a short top shot of 40lb mono. Last trip I caught 8 different species within 1.5 hours so the setup works quite well.

Just got back from colonet last week on BG 90 and the drift varried at times 7 oz was not enough on the 50 lb spectra, at times 10, 12 and 16 oz were required.

You're talking about weight for rockfishing, not jigging, correct?

I have plenty of 10-20 oz lead for bottom fishing but I'm talking about yoyo jigs. I don't think that salas makes a 16oz jig, do they ?

Thanks for the offer Jay but considering how much lead and heavy jigs that I'm already bringing I think that I'll be set. If I bring anything else I won't be able to lift my tackle bag...

Re: Knife jigs at Colonet

I am pretty facinated by the new (new to us anyways) butterfly jigs that are out. I spent the day at the fishermans tackle days gathering info on these as well as listening on two different seminars and personally for me I belive in these things very much after spending some time talking with one of the guys as well as doing a bunch of listening. Could it be hype? Maybe, but I have drawn a early conclusion that I (for now anyways) belive there is a big place for these new jigs.

Here is just a little about what I found out, and trust me, there is alot to know about this jigging system and how its done to make it work effectively.

You must have a high speed reel that will retrieve 40 to 42" per crank for the best effect of the jig.

A highly parabolic rod is very important with these jigs as well

The standard way of fishing these is with braided (spectra) line and a bimini twist in the main line as well as a 10 - 20' flourocarbon shock leader with a albright knot.

The proper technique for fishing these cant be stressed enough (so Im told) with the proper technique being as follows and taken from the butterfly jig brochure.

When the Jig is dropped to the desired depth, the rod tip is facing down. With a upward circular motion, the rod tip will be lifted up on the upswing of the reel handle and lowered on the downstroke of the rotation.

The reel is a tight circular motion that is close to the body with the rod butt held loosely under your left armpit. The distance in which the rod tip moves from top to bottom is approximately 10 to 20 inches depending on the desired lure action and retrieval speed. This technique will work on a fast or slow retrieve depending on how the fish are reacting.

Its said that the japanese anglers devoloped this new style of deep water jigging in the early 1990's as a way to get deep water bluefin. Its also said that these anglers were fishing depths as deep as 500 feet using the first generation of super lines along with flourocarbon shock leaders and the original jig designs.

Im personally looking forward to playing around with these in the near future and learning how to correctly fish them, as I think its going to be a badass new way to catch fish!!

Good luck!

The unknown fisherman

Re: Knife jigs at Colonet

After dropping a bunch of coin for the jigs as well as more 6x's and a bunch of heavy plastics, the parabolic rod is gonna have to wait. Mostly, the parabolic rod is because they are using spectra with fluoro which means no stretch in any of the line so the rod has to be the entire shock absorber.

I'm gonna fish it with the rods I have and see how it goes. I'll use a longer topshot of mono so that I have a little more shock in the shock leader and give it a go...

Re: Knife jigs at Colonet

I tried them a couple trips ago for Rockfish and lings up here in norcal. 20 fathoms or less.

They work good. The way I had them rigged was as follows. Tie to the top eye on the jig. Add the stinger here as well.

I hooked bottom 1 time all day. And I reeled it in!!! A little rock weighing like 5 pounds.

they work killer
