Anyone out freediving bugs?

Interested in going out free diving for bugs. Anyone else been doing this? Anyone have any recomendations for shallow reefy areas that could be buggy?

Regards
Brian

Re: Anyone out freediving bugs?

We are hitting the Zuniga Jetty tonight.

Always bugs around there.

Also the north county and sunset cliffs reefs usually hold.

Good luck.

Re: Anyone out freediving bugs?

If you're in LA I have found a secret spot where there are nice WSB and the vis is good enough for bugs. Late afternoon hunt for WSB. Hang out have a bite to eat, wait for the sun to go down and then back in the water for bugs. I'm heading out there this weekend.

Re: Anyone out freediving bugs?

As far as locations go, pretty much anywhere along LJ that is rocky, like from tourmaline up to the cove there is bugs eveywhere. just dont go alone and make sure there is minimal surge. I was just scoutin around tonight at Privates and saw a light first thing when I got there, then nothing for about 25 min. until I left. Looked to be just 1 light in the water, hope everything was ok for the dude.

Re: Anyone out freediving bugs?

Ok, since I don't do it any more, to many ear problems, I'll give up the secret spot. Wind and sea is loaded in the shallows. A calm day when the reef is not breakin. that reef has some gnarly bottom structure, series of trenches in 12-14 ft of water. To much surge and surf for sommercial guys or boats, but man its fun to dive. Also beware, there is always a strong rip there. have some energy left for the swim in, it takes 5 times as long as the 'ride' out.
