SARDINES:
Where do you guys prefer hooking the bait?
1: Nose
2: Butt
3: Trailing end of the dorsal fin.

I have noticed that after cking the guts of Tuna, Yellowtail & Dodo, 3 out of 4 bait fish were inhaled tail first.

I normally hook at the butt, but have learned to hook the bait using the 3rd method.

What are your thoughts?

Re: >> Hooking Bait <<

If casting distance isn't a factor I think keister works better. It really gets the bait moving and doesn't put the hook/line in front of the bait. I think the position of the hook also helps getting attacking fish hooked up.

I'm going to go out on a limb with this one a little. Recent observations made while fishing with dogs circling the boat were that keister hooked bait was less likely to get stolen off the hook by the dogs.

Yep, that's my rule. But I'll also but hook baits when they are lethargic and I need to get them to swim a little better or if I know that the fish are down deep. Nosehooked baits generally don't swim down as deep as butt hooked baits in my experience.

Re: >> Hooking Bait <<

Nose hook casting 12-40# Dine, Greenie, Cabalito, ect. Mostly Dine the other big baits dont get fished offten under 40#.

I almost always butt hook in the higher diamters. You need that burst to get away from the boat on heavy gear which you can not really cast well with especialy a sardine. I found that out the hard way awhile back when people were hooking good Tunafish and I was nose hooking on 60-80# and my bait was spinning circles 10 feet from the boat.

Butt hook to swim down too.

Allot of heavy's butt hook almost always but I just love to cast on the down wind corner out to the SPOT on lighter gear.

All three depending on what's getting bit.

Also tail hooking is great when you want the fish to swim directly away from you, regardless of swell and wind.
