Question Knife Jigs

I just picked up 2 of the 200g model's from Charkbait. I got the blue (sardine) and the green and yellow.
I've already watched the video clip of Shimano's Butterfly jig with Jose W and they recomend the fast crank, pump, crank, pump.
Was wondering if any else has had the chance to use them, and if so, how did you use them? Successful or is it a bunch a shit? :Rambo_Thr

I'll be using them on an upcoming 3 day trip on September 13th. Anybody try them locally?

Tight Lines or Tuff Titties! :jerkoff:

Re: Knife Jigs

I have a bunch of the jigs I bought in Singapore, some true japanese jigs ($15-25 a piece) and some knockoffs from China ($5-15). The key to fishing these is to have a welded ring on at the top of the jig and attach your assist hook to this. There is no pressure on the jig so there is no reason to break a jig for any reason. The chinese knock offs are crap for the most part and are nowhere near the quality of the japanese jigs, from the through wire to the design to the paint used on them (think old megabait paint problems). I have fished them out here but have not had the chance to really fish them a lot. They have caught some yellowtails and some Yellow Fin Tuna last season. Standard yo yo worked but if you fished them like they were supposed to be fished you got bit better (Jose Wejebe style). The ones being sold as knife jigs locally at most of the tackle shops are ok. I bought one and tried fishing it while comparing it to the ones I had bought in the Far East. I preferred the ones I had bought in the far east and the fish did too.

Here is a selection of the ones I have fished:

True Japanese knife jigs:

other side of them (the one that looks pink is actually red glow in the dark paint)

Different style (japanese)

Chinese jigs:

The assist hooks were put on the jigs before I put welded rings on them. It shows proper rigging techniques.

This is an extremely productive way of fishing that I think will create its own niche out here. I may have to start using it more since the tuna seem to be hanging deep and ignoring the bait lately.

Hope this helps.

Re: Knife Jigs

My buddy from Australia, who is a charter fisherman, bought some of the knife jigs when he was out for a visit a few months ago. He swears by them and said that he kills the tuna with them. I had never seen them before he showed them to me. I might have to get some from Charkbait while they're on special. My buddy bought them from Angler Center in Newport.

Re: Knife Jigs

First, I think I'm going to try fishing it the way they were fishing the butterfly jigs in the Shimano Clip.fficeffice" />Drop down to the fishy area, fast Crank, short pump, fast crank, short pump, fast crank, etc... If that doesn't work I read of another style they use in ffice:smarttags" />Japan. Drop it down into region you're targeting, engage, then do ten hard cranks, then lift up on the rod, then slowly let your tip down, then another ten hard cranks, lift the rod tip up, slowly let the tip down, repeat the process.

Have you heard of any other methods of fishing this jig?

Tight Lines,

What'd the kid lose? Tuna or Local fish?
