For fishing the slide, I carry two sizes of swimbaits, 3.5" and 5". Assorted size leadheads range from 1/2 ounce to 2 ounce. On the way out, ask the deckhands what size they recommend for fishing the slide.

As to what color you plan on using, light conditions have a lot to do with it. Have something bright rigged up and something dark.

Before you leave, superglue a couple different color and size combinations so you will have some ready to tie on. Its a whole lot easier to get this ready before you go. Check out www.fishtraplures.com for info on how to rig and fish them. Tons of helpful stuff on Barry's site.

If you read some of the fish reports, indications are that the Tuna are still chasing smaller baits, and primarily on the surface. That should tell you something about the size of the swimbait that might work best and the size of the leadhead too.

Ringed jig heads

I picked up some ringed jig heads from Ken's Custom Reels in Ocenanside for fishing the rubber on the slide.

I gotta say that I was impressed with the freedom of movement of the bait with the ringed head. That said, I doubt it matters much on the slide.

I'm not sure what name this fish trap is but this was the ticket last weekend:
5"
Black on Top
Thin Green Line thru mid section
Clear Crystal with sparkly Flakes on bottom
2 oz GREEN lead head with Bloody Nose and BIG EYES
we were trolling them slow to find the fish ...usually 1 would go off and a few moments into Neutral the second rod would go off on the drop/slide.
Fishing the sporties recommend using 3oz Megabait Iron for the slide in Chovie color...it's always worked for me even when the captains and deckhands said they wouldn't. My technique is to have the iron in the water with in 5 seconds of the first troll hook up, I prefer the Starboard side for this (I gotten 2 or 3 times more strikes off this side on the slide)let slide back 50-75 feet then close the bail and hold on. I wait till the boat comes to a complete stop before retrieveing since the fish like the action of a bait darting towards the bottom. The only way to pull this off is to be ready with rod in hand waiting for the troller to go off. Or leave your rod in a trashcan nearby you so you can grab it and drop the iron . I drop them 3' of the side of the boat. If you got to go and find your rod you're too late.
