Ok, here is my take on the upping the fluoro. Most of this is from what I have learned while fishing here and quite a bit while in Florida on my last trip. If you tie good knots, and do not get sawed off a majority of the breakoffs you are going to have are from chew throughs if you are not using circle hooks. Why not up the fluoro leader you are going to use to prevent this. Fluoro is virtually invisible underwater so going up a line class is easy to do. With the higher class line you will have better abbrasion resistance and it will be tougher for the fish to chew through. It was not uncommon while I was in florida for us to be fishing 20lb mainline and 60-100lb fluoro leaders. This can give you a great piece of mind to make sure you don't get chewed off.

Some people say that it will affect the way your bait swims. A 4 foot piece of fluoro will have little to no effect on your bait. Hell, I saw a 3 inch pilchard swimming off with a 5 foot piece of 80lb fluoro attached and it still got hammered.

For the piece of mind I will always bump up my leader. There is a reason most of the rest of the world fishes this way.

Just my 0.02.

Marcus

I hear you Marcus loud and clear. I agree with you Fluorocarbon has phenomenal abrasion resistance and that is one of the main reasons why I ONLY used straight flourcarbon wind on top shots on my recent 22 day on the RP. I used it to prevent chew offs plus I know it gets bit better. So I 100% agree on that subject. But I just don't get chewed off very often on smaller fish which I think this post is pertaining too. You know fishing it has allot of variables and one set up might not be ideal for the next size or type of fish. Florida is very different then here. I cant even think of a situation where we would use 20lb main line and 80lb Fluorocarbon leader like in Florida. Billfish, Tarpon, I Dunno.

You will notice I use straight fluorocarbon top shots in this report. But this is not Albacore or Yellowtail.

I fished a 3 day last summer on the Legend sponsored by Albacore, Izorline, Accurate, Owner Hooks, Calstar, Seeker, ect. I don't like dragging names into posts but we had the Izorline rep/pro staffer on board who is a straight fish killer. You will find him inside the RP 2005 brochure with a Cow. He brought fluorocarbon in 25-30# for everyone to use for Albacore. During the seminar he suggested same pound on same pound, this is the Izorline rep/pro staff. I think he has a good handle on the subject. Crew backed him up.

Yes allot fish heavier leader so they can leader the fish. I gaff them in the head.

I understand your point and spoke to someone I respect allot who will one up from time to time too.

Discussing heavy string, Hollow splices, loops, crimping, glue, sanding, burning, needles, ect is a entire different subject.
