Too Spectra or not too Spectra

Just got the Accurate reels in for the boat...

Debating on whether to load with Spectra & top shot them.
or just straight mono....because it's for 6 pack customers, one
of my thoughts is, if I have the spectra that tangles may be a big issue.
Maybe do spectra with a longer top shot?

I know if I put spectra, that in the long run it will be cheaper just replacing top shots. But is it worth the possible arrgravation of tangling the spectra.
The biggest unknown is how oftern I would have to deal with tangles...seems like a catch 22 right now.

use a 100 yard top shot, that will save a little on the amount of mono you will have to change out. besides your deckhands will be on top of things to keep the tangles out. tangels are the 2nd thing you talk about on the way out after the safety and zero tolerance talk.

My 2 cents load spectra , & top off 100 - 200 yards mono...Heck one good run will easily spool 100 yards.

I agree with Jeff, mono only.

For the amount of fishing you are doing with changing line every month or so. If you use the affordable mono it will be much cheaper. I think spectra is great for your personal gear but not for guests. Just my opinion.

Also my Accurate's really don't like it when I leave spectra on all year and don't wash it each year. I have a spool and frame with some corrosion already on it. This reel was less than a year old and I was fishing 3 to 4 days a week. I was kinda hoping for a little more robust reel.

BTW - I am very meticulous when it comes to cleaning and washing my fishing gear. So it was not as though I let it sit without washing it.

6-pac - mono

I bring my own gear on a six pack.
If your guests don't have their own gear or are occasional fisherpersons then they more than likely won't know the spectra thing.

Keep it Simple

I would pack some spectra BACKING on there with a long mono top shot. Long enough top shot to where you will only get into the spectra backing if you hook a big fish. Save you big dollar and I would imagine you have BIG spools of mono that you can get many fills off of.

Just my 2 cents. backing not rimmed.

I vote straight mono.
Reason: K.I.S.S.

The last thing ya want to do is be messing with re-tying topshots to spectra.
Chances are with a charter boat you will be cutting out alot of backlashes.
If ya keep spools of the mono sizes you use on board and your reel gets low on line, ya just strip it and reload.

Straight mono. You will be changing it so fast that you will go through a top shot very quickly, so what's the point. Spectra makes for lots of tangles and is a pain in the ass for both the crew and the beginner fisherman. Have you ever seen a bad backlash with spectra? It's ugly.

I had my non fishing uncle out on my boat last year. We got a tuna on a jig strike and while the line was screaming out right after the strike, he thought it was a good idea to flip that little lever thingy on the reel to make it stop. Instant spectra backlash. All I could do was cut it out.

Also spectra will cut the shit out of you. Do you want that liability? Its a long shot but with sue happy people these days you never know.

The best thing is to get a line manufacturer to sponsor your boat. Then you get the shit for free.
