Oregon fishing.

Ok people I need some help on this one.

Looks like I will be going to Oregon for five days. From the 4th of July through the 8th…. Family vacation. Two or three days at the shore and the rest in McMinville.

I plan on taking some tackle. Looks like all sorts of fish to play with.
I know this is way in advance but I would like to start making my plans ASAP for better pricing and piece of mind.

I've found all sorts of sportfishing opportunities up there. I was hopeing someone could help me narrow down my choices.
Anybody know of a good boat and guide? Or just some good connections?

I will be in North Or. The town is called Seaside. It is just south of Astoria.

don't know any guides but most of the rivers along the coast have landings that rent skiffs for the salmon run. They also rent crab traps for the proper season. On the washington side you will see guys selling bait out of the back of pickup trucks during the salmon runs.
So are you camping? Did Cape Lookout a few years ago in August. there for 5 days and we got 7 inches of rain. be prepared for rain.
Also went up to long beach on the Washington side for a day trip. International kite festival.

No not camping. Hotels and families houses.

I know nothing about salmon runs or even when they run. I am assuming I should take like a 12#15# and 20# set ups.

Heard there is some good Halibut fishing too. Again no clue on the season. Was hoping someone could fill me in on this kind of stuff. All the web sites I go to tend to be testimonials and bragging. Couldn’t find much information or any educational sites. Although my search did start here and I haven't put much effort into it. I will buckle down and look into it a little more.

I'll give you my .02 from a Northern California perspective (very similiar fishing). I'm 99% sure rockfish season is open. I like to use a med. action setup for rockfish. I prefer to fish swimbaits for them with an 8' seeker (15-20) and a calcutta 400 with 20lb specra and a 20lb fluro topshot. The rocks will scrape away on the spectra if you don't use a topshot. For halibut (might be early, not sure) I like to use the same setup, but with a 3-way swivel. I go 8 inches to the weight and about 5-6ft on the Hook leader. If you can get live bait great, if not, you can drag popsicles (frozen herring or chovies), or even use plastics for them in the sandy areas. If you can't get out on a boat, toss swimbaits from the shore in the rocky areas. If all that fails, bring a spining setup like Brad (ZZZZZZ) uses and go for perch. Hope this helps. As far as finding a means to get on the water, I'd look on a map for the harbors, and call the harbormasters office. They can put you in touch with 6 pack or open load charters, or you may even get lucky and meet someone down at the marinas. Oregonians are quite freindly I have found.

Wish I was goin with you. My parents leave for their move to Eugene next Wednesday. I would imagine that as long as the weather is nice to you, you could get some decent fishing in. Everytime I've been around Astoria they've been getting beaten by the winds. The Columbia gets raging around there. Most likely you're looking at sturgeon on the Columbia as your best prospect for that time. Might wanna check out this guide site for help http://www.tgfusa.com/ . Little bit later and you could head down to Tillamook Bay and fish the big salmon that head in there for the 5 tribs.

Bouy 10 on the Columbia is a great spot. However, last report I saw was the spring run was way down. They had only counted 200 kings when they should have been in the 1000s. Tillamook and Garibaldi are great latter in the year.
Just checked the fish count for the columbia total 4300. They closed the river to fishing 4/20 due to low counts.

Well I did some more searching and found a 6 pac that will be going for Salmon in the ocean. I guess they shut down the rivers a couple of weeks before I get there. They have already reached the count they want for Sturgeon too. So that would be strictly catch and release. Still a good time though.

Can't wait to go. I will take some pics if I end up getting to fish.......... The wife will be 7 monthes prego. Who knows what kind of "fishin time" I will get. Maybe I should book the trip now. Non refundable, I would have to go. Wouldn't want to waste money now would I.

I lived on the Oregon coast for 12 years (Florence) , you will probably want to try for the spring chinook , halibut and lings (lings get HUGE offshore Oregon) ! The biggest salmon on the west coast and this is a fact (barring north Vancouver and Alaska) is around Girabaldi and other towns in that vicinity . The species there get bigger for some reason where the three rivers converge --50 lbers and above are normal .
If you head across the river-- shoot out of Illwaco on the Washington side and fish the bar . That's the only place where I seen the fish I was catching on a swell way above my head !
I'll be more than happy to give you information about the Oregon and Washington coast fishing , camping or whatever --I also lived in Washington for 15 years .
Have fun up there !
