Wanted to get some opinions on the MXL 2-speed. I was thinking of getting one and putting 30# top with 50# spectra backing for throwing iron. Would 30# be too much for the reel?

I like the idea-this reel comes with a casting feature which helps reduce backlash-
factory spec's say 360 yard of 20# mono so if you go with 50#spectra and a 30# mono top you'll be fine and have way more than 360yards of line Max Drag setting is 14# so the reel with do fine with 30#...IMO
I have this reel and fish 30#. I was able to kill big Yellowtail on the Iron in Cedros, Tortugas and San Martin. Also LJ on the yak. Both bait and Iron. While in San Martin, would drop the the iron in at high speed and when I was bit, drop the hammer on the fish and grind it up in low gear. I'm waiting to get the lx-2spd for my 40#. The Avet's cast a mile.
Avet's Rule!!!
I fish spectra backing and P-line CXX 15# on mine (breaks at like 27#). I caught a lot of fish last year on this reel and I really like it. You could fish 40# on it I guess, but you'd have a problem with the amout of line on it.
MXL 2-speed.I have one and fished 40# mono with 50# spectra backing. I fished lastt season and it kicked tail !!! Since that reel I now have the 40/2 for 60# and just bought the jx-2 for 50# .
Sweet on the 40#. I 'm going on a Tony Reyes trip in early Sep. and was kind of worried about fishing the 30# with the rocks and the nasty Yellowtail and Cabrilla. I'll go with the 50# spectra and 40# down there. Switch to 30# up here.

Jx 2
question did you get the narrow or wide..i,m trying to decide...wide a lttle more line..but a bit awkward and have to pay attention to even line retival..got any input would gratly be appreciated :jumpin:
I didn't think the jx2 came in a wide in narrow. The lx and the jx are the wide(lx) and the narow(jx). Now the mx comes in wide(mxl) and narrow(mxj) - I got the MXJ in the 2spd.
Mo Betta;
I used to carry 8 setups on a sporty for tuna. With the Avets I only need 4. The light weight, strong and great casting two speeds make you ready for anything. Since they don't have a top bar like the shimano's they make fishing baits really nice.

I love the whole Avet line-up. I just recently aquired the narrow two-speed and I have zero complaints. The best of both worlds. 6 to 1 for rocking the jig and 3 to 1 when I hang a monster.
