circle hooks, no thanks!

Not trying to be negative but i lost three fish to pulled circle hooks on a recent long trip, one was surely a cow, heavy SOB, 40 mins later, pulled friggin hook. 6/0 ringed super mutu. Also snapped an 8/0 ringed matzuo sickle.

I feel confident in my ability to get bit on a fly-lined sardine on a ringed nickel cad 6/0 7691, which i plan to fish in the future, as i did in the past. Circle hooks? Not for me.

I will let the fish swallow my bait, pull like a mofo and take my chances on whipping him fast before my 150# breaks off on his mouth or teeth. If i pull hard, heavy drag, sit on the rod, and wind i believe the fish will die before he breaks me off.

Friggin circle hooks! Rant OFF

I feel the same way, have never really liked them myself, yet they do have a good hookup ratio. I would trust my 130# floro and a sharp j hook.

I have not fished them very much because of the same issues. I keep trying because that is the way things are heading. Yes, better hook up, but I like the Bloody Deck.

Great design, you have to admire someone sitting down and engineering something new. On the other hand I use a mustad off-set, If your sleeping at the rail you can wait and swing after they've digested your bait. Buy that I mean a split second is everything when it comes to fishing. You miss out on fish jumping, kelp patties, oppertunity, fishing is being ready when you hit the rail. The hook is only part of the tool, I've watch my fishing buddy dump fish, one after another using a circle hook. Taking the swing out fishing is like taking the swing out of golfing............

IME 80 percent of the time if fish a J hook like your supposed to fish a circle you'll get the same result. It seems that often the swing is what hooks the fish deep instead of in the jaw. Don't know about the really big fish but this has been the case with me and the few I have hooked that were around 100 lbs.

J hooks for me as well, ringed hoodlums and gorillas. Just got back from a 10 day on the shogun and witnessed a super mutu break in half on a big fish. Seen to many pulled hooks also.

Mustad 92677. Bill Casper taught me about this hook many years ago.

But I didn't know they made heavy beaked hook?!?! The 92677's I have seen are for 50# or lighter.

Also much easier to bait a J hook and not manhandle the bait. Better presentation IMHO

This fish was caught on really heavy tackle, a 130 ST, with 400 lb. Moi Moi , and a single crimped circle hook. So there was a lot of hard pulling going on, on both ends, but the circle hook did the dirty deed. Several times, so I can not hate them just yet.
