I've hooped and landed bugs in depths ranging from 10' up to 150' and during most if not all of the moon phases. Never really kept track of the tides only because if I wanted to hoop I would hoop regardless of what the moon phase or tides were. Some people say that hooping sucks during a full moon but I've landed bugs during this time.

Goodluck!!

It seems our worse time was during slack tide. Shut down 100%

You need some current, just not too much. I prefer the incoming tide over at catalina without the moon.

Slack is generally thought of as the 30 before to 30 after a high/low tide. As the tide approaches is max level (hi or low) there won't be much water moving. Moving water carries the bait scent and pulls the bugs in.

Too much current seems to blow out the bait scent trail and the bugs can't hone in on it.

Depths vary during the season the bugs will move from shallow to deep and back to shallow at different times of the year.

The best way to get good at bugging is PRACTICE. No one is going to tell you how. Get out there, pay attention, take notes(no joke) and you'll figure it out.

Good luck.

I dont think there is rhym or reason for the crawl, just when I think I have it figured out, the bugs change the rules. No matter, I go when I can.

No hard fast rules for sure, but here are some opinions:
Full moon-not as good
calm glassy water-not as good
Incoming tide-better

And there are cases where I have totally proved these wrong. In fact, I took a marine bioligist out hooping one night, and we discussed these things exactly, by the end of the night, he was just as confused about thier patterns as I am.

just my .02

Keep your extra rope submerged.

I dont mind giving tips out as many have been handed to me. Here is one I will throw out and it will be one of your most go to tools both for planning and when you are on the water.

Get a good tide book like this what is TIDELOG?

This will show you what tims the tides are coming in and out and most importantl what time and how full the moon will be.

Example: This saturday we have a 1/4 moon but it wont start rising till 10 pm and wont be overhead till way later, also low tide is about 7 pm . These are good conditions for me so guess where I will be?

Generaly,

Shallower earlier in the season and on of the dark moon.

Deeper later in the season and when there is a full moon.

You get 5 nets or 10 depending on how many guys are with you, use them wisely and you'll find what depth they're at

Best time to go, when you can. Deffenetly cant catch'em from a couch so if your on the water you have a chance. Worst thing that happens is you have a great night on the water , just without bugs. Best case scenario, you have a great night on the water with limits .
