It's not cool to see a nice hole with mussels and scallops growing, and then a big white plastic bag and a beer can jammed in there with the sealife.
I am a practical person, and I realize not everything is going to be dealt with perfectly. But if trash is to be dumped, at least send it to the abyss in better than 150 fathoms.

People just think that tossing things in a huge body of water makes no difference. It's joke! We see junk around here all the time.

Some that work on the boats are very aware of the littering issue. Some aren't. It seems to vary in general mood by boat, meaning the captain has a lot to do with it. I agree that we shouldn't dump anything that isn't biodegradable in the ocean or back country.
One thing that I see just about everyone disregard is throwing fishing line in the water. Maybe short pieces don't matter like less than 10 or 12 feet but when someone throws 20 or 50 yds of line in it is a real fishing hazzard. You hook that stuff and it gives so it feels like a fish. It is usually hung up on some structure and gets very hard to get free of.
BTW, once we are all gone for thousands of years and some other organisms find this planet and start looking around, they are going to think they found the biggest styraphome mine ever.

I have even seen sport boat captains toss their cigarette butts overboard while inside the harbor. That drives me crazy because I have seen literally thousands of butts littering the bottom while diving at Little Corona in Newport Beach decades ago. It was a disgusting sight to see. The surge was pushing them back and forth all over the place. Most people that smoke would probably quit on the spot if they could see the result of the careless disposal of the remnants of 5 minutes of soothing menthol pleasure.
I always make an effort to clean up after others in addition to removing my garbage.
However, I draw the line at Gatorade bottles containing yellowish looking fluids. Not my yob, man!

You know I stopped short of mentioning cigarette butts because I know the people that smoke probably can't imagine how annoying and how much trash they actually are. When cigarette butts go out the window around the coast (on land) they pretty much all end up in the water and most at the beach.
I know many smokers will take exception with this and think it is too picky, but it is what it is...

Most smokers get more irritated by somebody suggesting they clean up after themselves than by being asked to simply quit smoking. They laugh off the suggestion that the cessation of smoking might be a good thing but really take offense to being reminded that their garbage on the ground is unsightly and should be properly disposed of. They will have a whole slew of empty cans or bags nearby that they could toss their mess into, but they almost always resort to dropping/throwing/flicking the smelly little leftovers directly onto the ground. None of my friends do this these days, at least not when I am around.
I used to think that the vent windows on cars were put there to make it easier for smokers to toss their butts out of the car while driving. I only smoked cigarettes for about 2 months in Junior High School so I never got to toss any butts out of a car. |
