I think a lot of it is accidental / forgetful, there are however a select group of individuals who feel that it is the job of someone else to clean up after them.

I always go out of my way to pick up the trash either in the bay or out in the open ocean. It's amazing the crap you find floating in the water. I've picked up air mattresses, boxes, clothing, large metal cans, gas cans, balloons, booze bottles, and plastic bags just to name a few. I know some of it blows out when you're not looking and that's why you need to secure everything before you get underway. Old boy scout motto is "leave the place cleaner when you leave than what it was when you arrived".

OK since you brought it up whats up with long range and multi day boats throwing trash at Sea I have seen this many times. This summer on a 5 day the cook dumped a cardboard box over and when questioned he said it was biodegradable perhaps it is but why not bring it back and throw it out properly ?

Cardboard is one thing but plastic and glass and shit like that is a dumb thing to throw over the rail. It takes forever to disinigrate and will just endup floating somplace where it becomes and eye sore. I have seen some polution picks that make me very discusted heres one of them.

Foodscraps, cardboard, etc. is biodegradable and isn't an issue.
Throwing anything overboard that is plastic or plastic foam is not only illegal but makes you a piece of shit slob in my opinion.
I always followed the boyscout motto of leave it cleaner than you found it. If you took it out on the water with you, bring it back to throw away.

Jim and I pick shit up off the water everytime we are out in the yaks. Take your shit home with you people. My yak gets heavy hauling all your trash. Jim did pick up a pair of good swim fins in the Lj kelp however.
