Fishing the slide is the best, Buy yourself a handful of big hammer swimbaits and some lead heads, I like the sardine, mack colors and purple and black to start with, about 30-50lb test line when the boat is coming to the stop after a jig strike go to the stern on the starboard side and drop back the bait just put it in free spool and let it go as the boat is in transition to position its self that bait is a prime target to get picked up. usually at this time everyone is reeling in their lines. Make sure you are careful and courteous of those around you when doing this if the guys fish is headed in your direction follow your line and make sure that you arent going to tangle before you attempt it. As for bait fly lined bait can be used and casted on a variety of lines it all depends on the size of the fish.

if you're on a packed boat, beware... you may not even be able to get in on the slide without getting tangled...
Some people are pretty greedy on the slide and always have something ready to fish the corner...
Fishing the slide is the best spot if u can get it....
if someone is greedy on the slide, buy them multiple beers...so u can take their spot.

Every boat slides different... I love fishing plastics on the slide. I guess I could be called one of the greedy ones because I'll sit and wait with my rod in hand for a jig stop and then I'm the first one in as the jigs are coming in. Watch the way the boat turns, follow your line and if you are fishing plastics, don't soak it. Get in, get it out a little and if you're not bit, get the hell out of the way of the guys fishing bait. I usually drop back immediately and if I'm not hammered right away I wind in and head for the bow, unless it goes ape shit WFO. From the bow I'll cast upswell a few times before changing up to bait or iron.
There have been many drops where I'm bit on the slide and have an albie at gaff before the trollers all all the way in.

Your best bet would be to cast off the sides of the boat, not in the stern where the trolling lines are, to keep from burning one off. Always follow your line, no angles equals no tangles. Have a fun trip.

Always follow your line, no angles equals no tangles. Have a fun trip. | Good stuff. I'm with Matt on this one. If no one else is gonna sit back there with a plastic drooped off their finger with reel in freespool waiting for the jigs to go off or stand at the bait tank hook in one hand a bait already picked out then I surely will. If that makes me guilty of greed so be it. I will take my turn doing it if there are several people that wish to give it a shot. To many people trying to do it never works no matter how experienced the individual anglers are. It takes "TEAM WORK" to put together a successful trip.
You may try a seperate rotation from the trollers. Run them in reverse so that everyone can get more time in the water. I think it's best to limit the people sliding as well as trolling, and recommend no more than four. Once the boat comes to a stop then the bait goes in with the wind in your face. Could be port side...could be starboard side...be flexible, and adapt at each stop. The crew, most likely the Captain, will let you know which side to toss the bait, and when. Listen to the crew. They want you to catch fish. Bottom line is fishing the slide is, (if done properly), a very effective method to catch fish. More time in the water for everyone, fewer tangles, (again more time in the water), higher count at the end of the day, (fewer frustrated or butt hurt and angry people on the boat). Remember this is supposed to be fun, and relaxing.
p.s. My favorites are 5" black/purple and Channel Island Chovie with a one to two ounce lead tri-head with eyes, (yes...the eyes are important). Coming in a close second would be dropping back a collar hooked anchovie using a three to five foot florocarbon leader tied on to a 1 to 2 ounce chrome torpedo depending on how deep the fish are being metered, and the weather conditions. Good luck. Let us know how you do and don't forget the pics.

"no angles, no tangles" One of the best and truest quotes ever. Thanks Spike. And Kevan too. If there are a gang of guys eager to fish the slide then I actually get out of the way. What usually happens is I'm the only one doing it for 2 or 3 stops and then a few people catch on. By then I usually have a fish or three so I go do something else. Usually fish the plug from the bow. If the fish are only eating bait then I just get into the shuffle with everyone or again, go fish the bow. I try to stay away from the crowd and not be "that guy"...

Greedy guys dont wait on the stern for hrs with a bait or swimbait ready to go, smart guys do !!! Amazing how many jackpots are won by those same guys too. Its easy to be lazy and just wait in the galley drinking beers or playing cards while waiting for someone to scream HOOKUP!!! Not so easy to stand in the stern in good or shitty weather for hrs waiting for what may be your only shot.
The early bird gets the worm!!!
