Questions from a newb....

I've been fishing for years, but all freshwater stuff. I've been wanted to get out and fish the ocean. I'll occasionally toss some plastics off of the Shelter Island pier but havent had a whole lot of luck....I guess I just dont know what Im doing!

I want to get a boat someday, but until then I was thinking about trying out some of the sportfishing boats. I imagine that would be great place to learn and catch some great fish while doing it! My fishing gear is limited as far as ocean stuff goes...Ive got tons of gear but nothing for the ocean, well I do have one "bay pole".

Do the sportfishing charters rent or loan equipment? Who do you recommend and why? What kind of price would a guy be talking for a day boat?

I'm a newb to the site, so be gentle!!

Since you are new heres a good start, put the threads you start in the right place or you will get shit talked to you through out the entire thread lol.. Fishing Chit Chat is the place for this. As for your gear yes you can rent some and the question is rather bland, remember there are variations of trips you can take such as 3/4-10 day trips be more specific and I think that would help. In general carry atleast 3 sizes 20,30,40-50 lb set ups and also specify what you would like to go after. Other then that Welcome to BD.

Thanks! Yeah I figured I was gonna f*ck something up on my first BD topic!

Perhaps a Mod can move this to the right area......

I was thinking about starting of with a 3/4 day boat....and if your asking what kind of fish Im after.....I would be at a total loss...How about really big ones that taste great!! I would hate to say something like Albacore and be a dumbazz cause its the wrong season for it or something. I've caught a nice Halibut in the past, that was fun and very tasty!!

yea im sure someone will move it for you. And a 3/4 day trip out of San Diego can vary in price check out Pointlomasportfishing.com and you can check out the prices If you need 1.5 day and up trips let me know. And you are actually in the start of our offshore season, Albacore, Yellowtail,Dorado,Tuna,Marlin will all start to pop up here and there, if you are going to go after this i would suggest atleast a 1 day trip if not more till about the first week of Aug or last week of July, as they will still be with in 120-60 miles offshore after this you can just jump on private boats and catch them locally. Again the 3 set ups are pretty good for what you will need out here, use 2 spd reels if you can afford them if not there are tons of great reels out there you can purchase, check out the classifieds here for good deals. If you want to do halibut fishing you can pretty much do that year around in the local bays like San diego and Long Beach that are very productive. If i were you I would add myself to the boat ho list that way you can let people know you are always looking for a ride and willing to help with expenses and cleaning its a good deal and great way to make friends here on Bloody Decks.

Here's some help...

1/2 day boats typically fish the kelp beds (Mission Bay boats go to La Jolla, Shelter Island boats go to Point Loma). Typical critters are bass (sand, spotted, calico), barracuda, bonita, halibut and assorted rockfish with the occasional WSB or Yellowtail.

3/4 day boats typically fish the Coronados with pretty much the same species as above but a better shot at Yellowtail.

1 day overnight trips are the common open party tuna trips that fish for tuna, yellowtail and dorado. They fish within about 90 miles of SD.

1.5 day trips usually fish the same areas as the overnight boats but you get an extra half day of actual fishing time.

2-3 day trips usually fish within 150 miles of San Diego but other than that typically fish for the same species with the exception of the winter trips that run to Colonet and San Martin for rockfish and winter Yellowtail.

5+ day trips fish from Guadalupe down and target tuna, yellowtail, dorado, wahoo...

As to what gear for each of these trips, we could fill a book with suggestions and opinions. I'd start out with the minimal gear and take it from there. A penn 500 loaded with 30# on a decent 7 foot rod will allow you to do most everything up to 3 days. You can add lighter and heavier outfits as you see fit or long rods for throwing the iron.

Jump on the Mission Belle out of Pt. Loma sportfishing.................be nice to Karen and I bet she will show you the ropes. For your first trip you might just wanna rent a rod..............They are not the best but.............they will catch fish. Look around at what the other guys got, by simply asking you could get a "test drive" or at the very least........a long story about why it is the best gear and everyone fishing with anything different is completely fucked up. After you get an idea about what you want to buy.......then do it. Almost always if you buy gear..........even from a really great tackle store before you KNOW what YOU want...............you end up replacing it in short order. Good luck and WELCOME to the chaos.
