Albacore rod

I won a Graftec rod on a 1.5 day trip aboard the pacific queen a couple years ago and getting ready for another trip this summer. The rod is a GIS80L 12-20# and I am questioning if this rod is enough to handle 30 to 40 lb albacore and yellowtail.I want to equip it with a avet reel left handed two speed and am looking for suggestions on which model avet to purchase.I am a green horn to off shore fishing and would appreciate the advise of the many pros on this site.....Thank you!!!

Rod won't handle it. Get at least a 7' calstar or seeker 6470 rod for your 2 spd mjx avet with 50lb.spectra and 30-40 lb. topshot. I recommend you go to squidco and check with them!

The rod is rated to fish 12-20 lb. line which means that ideally it'll be rigged with about 15 lb. test which is not what you want to be fishing with when hooked into a 30+ lb. fish. It'll take more time and effort than need be. Get a different rod like the one mentioned above. Good Luck!

MXL with 25# or 30# topshot and a good 7-8 ft rod is fine for alberts.

I fish an MXL or a progear 282 on a Seeker 270H-8 for chickens. The 8 footer is nice for tossing those dines way off the stern.

Yup, what these guys said. Personally for that reel though I would opt for 40# spectra.

I have a Seeker model BSC 670_7" that I used previously worked great but I am looking to have a somewhat less bulky rod if possible that I can cast better with. It is awkward for me too cast with offshore rods because I freshwater bass fish mostly and just dont get offshore fishing but ever couple years and cant get the practice needed. There were guys that had rods that seemed smaller like deckhand rods or something I am not sure, any ideas what they may have had? If were to use the seeker what model left hand two speed avet should I purchase? Thank you for your comments and help!!

Keep the Graftec and put a smaller non 2 speed reel on it and have some 15 or 20 for when the fish want anchovies. Keep the Seeker for 30 when fish want to bite well. Add a 270H-8 for in between.

Graftechs can fish at or above the top rating. I use my GIS80L for 15# but it'll fish 20# well too. Feels a lot like a Calstar 800XL.
