On a PB I collar hook my baits for surface fishing or nose hook if I have to break out the torpedo rig to get down to deeper fish.

A dead bait hooked and ready to go works real fine on the slide in the subsiding wash IF YOU ARE QUICK...

There is a guy around san diego, very cool dude, his name is
Vern Barney, and he is the very best i have ever seen fishing the slide.

I watched him go 8for 10 and that was after i started counting.

slide bait always get nose hooked PERIOD. Belly hooked bait comes off too easily.

Nose hooked slide bait can be retrieved slowly and oftern gets bit on the retrieve. You cant get bit on the retrieve with a belly hooked bait, unless u get a little lucky.

drifting i belly hook sardine 95% or more of the time.

I agree! If you nose hook them, they are less likely to have the hook ripped out. If you belly hook them, the sheer force and drag in the water due to the slide will rip the hook out. A nose hooked bait will glide through the water and look a lot more life like on the slide. I would recommend belly hooking baits while on a drift!!!
