Trolling clamps for non trolling reels?

This is probably a dumb newbie question but here goes. Is there a workaround to using a larger NON trolling reel with the current trolling configuration on the 1.5 or 2 day albacore trips? They are using trolling reels with clamps and hang them off the the stern. Trolling reels have the loops to attach to. I have a 2 speed avet lx reel i'd like to use to troll on these trips. Is there like a clamp I can get to attach the claps from the stern to since there are no rod holders on the stern used for trolling. Forgive me if i don't know the proper terminology.

What pound test line do you have on that Avet? Usually the sport boats use their gear and its heavy line like 150+ gear for the troll to get the fish to the boat ASAP for a better bait bite. Anything under 100# they probably won't want you using it on the troll.. I would just have a dead dine pinned on and wait to drop it back on the slide right after a troll hook up if it was me.

Just noose a trolling strap around the rod above the reel.

There is/was the GS bracket if you can find one. Seems they may be out of business.

Don't use your LX on a sport boat for trolling....use the boat gear as it will have at least 80 pound if not more and will have harness lugs.

Your LX would be great for a private boat.....use it for the slide on the sportie.

There is no way I would put a reel over the side for trolling if it didn't have lugs unless of course I was on a 300+ Yellow Fin Tuna and then I would toss my rig over after the back up was attached....whats 1,500 bucks

got it. titan thanks for the reply. When I went out 2 seasons ago, guys using their own trolling gear always seemed to outfish the boat setups. I was just trying to multi task, because I got this LX which i think is a little big for throwing sardines on the slide for 1.5.-2 day albacore trips

By the way titan, I am sort of bent on the trade. Not sure if the LX will be too big for what im trying to do which is just 1.5-2 days trips

the lx 2 speed will be great for bait and iron fishin on those trips. youll absolutely killem on that thing.

i think trolling with that reel would damage it if your constantly gettin bit. 60lb is usually frowned upon on the sporties for trolling.

use the boats gear, if you dont like what their draggin on the setup u choose, grab your own trolling lure and ask them if you can change it. they'll usually help you out.

LX is not for trolling on the big boats, minimum if you can get away maybe an HX wide, but a 3/0 is what I bring for my trolling rig. Its not that the guys who bring their own setup kill more, they pick the correct color of feather running for the day rather than relying on the boats color, that was just randomly picked.

Make sure you bring a purple/black feather rigged on 80lb or more...

If you want your own trolling set up for shorter trips get a used penn 6/0 and load it with 80. Most Capts are fine with 80 for the length trips you mention

Lighten your load and use the boat rods. The gear is not going to help you get bit any better or any worse. Invest in some good lures or at least a wide variety so you are always prepared. Often the boat Lures take a beating and the the crew will usually welcome your offer to use your own. You said that you were new so ask the crew whats getting bit, don't be that guy that has it all figured out and drops a Rapala back at 8knts and fouls all the other lines.

Start off simple

4 small ablbie feathers; 2 drk (prpl/blk & grn/blk) & 2 light (blu/wht,Mex flg, Zuch, ect)

4 Tuna feathers; Same color schemes

2 Cedar plugs; 1 natural & 1 blk/prpl or whatever.

Use light colors on bright sunny days & drk colors on grey/morning and evening times.

Knowing what to use and what the target fish are feeding on will make way more of a difference than what rod and reel you're using.

On 1.5-2 day trips most regulars won't bring their own trolling gear and if the bite is going well most of them will be trying to give up their trolling rotation as well.TROLLING ROTATION is a duty and part of working as a team, i hate it when passengers don't show up and don't bother to find someone to fill their spot.

Many fishermen think the crew is just there to throw bait, gaff fish, and work on tangles but the smart anglers know that crew members posess wisdom and often great instincts. Talk to the crew and ask questions cause that's what your paying for.
