Lowrance Rookie Question

I recently purchased a Lowrance HDS-5. I tried it out last week in La jolla and noticed the sonar always had something marked, i couldn’t tell what was a fish. This screen was never blank. Is this normal or is there a setting that need to be adjusted or did I install the transducer wrong. (I installed it in-hull in my kayak using goop). I’m new to this sonar thing.
