They are biting now. The bigger grade are still at Clemente and some around both ends of Catalina.Yes the squid does help in getting bait bites going but you can catch them now by yoyoing irons. The 9 spot off the west end of Clemente is a great spot for fishin irons for Yellowtail but this time of year it can be pretty rough there on the anchor.Dont forget Yellowtail are considered a bottom fish even though they will feed on the surface and school up under kelps. You can catch Yellowtail year round and water temp doesnt really matter that much.I have caught Yellowtail on iron in 59 degree water at the our islands and also down on the ridge in 76-78 degree water.

This is a pic from Clemente a while back, dont forget this grade of Yellowtail are still out on the 9 spot, just have to fish deep for them and bear the weather.

9 spot??

Yes I'm a newbie - I know
but I am hoping the weather fares well to head out either this Thursday or Saturday. Could you help me out with exactly where the 9 spot is?
I have the all the gps and depth charts for Catalina- just don't see it labeled anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Yea, its San Clementes wet end, on the way there it looks like there is a small town at the very end, u go around the tip of that, and ur at the 9, there is huge rock there jutting out of the water, and tons of kelp (That is everywhere on San though...)

Sry if this sounds retarded but, when you yo yo an iron, do u drop strait down, like a reel 'yo-yo' and just crank it up? Or do u do like pulling motion...?

Its right off church rock on the west end of Clemente. dont fish right on the hi spot 55 feet deep.drop you anchor a little east of the hi spot in 85 to 90 feet of water.
