| Anyone know an easy way to snell a freakin hook
I need to snell an octopus hook, but want it to slide so that i can adust for bait size.
Is there a good EASY way to do this?
I have tried as per a knot book i have and i cant seem to get the knot to cinche down on the hook. Seems to just pull apart!
Basically what i'm looking to do is fish a treble trap setup but have a single hook just up a ways on a sliding snell. I hope this makes sense. Anyway, i would like the single hook to adjust so that i can use larger or smaller baits as i see fit.
I bought a package of three allready pre tied and really like the concept, but would prefer to tie my on.
Tricks and or tips appreciated

You mean you want the front hook to slide and leave the back hood stationary right?
That means a regular snell for the back hook and speed snell or plain uni knot for the front, must be tied on the shank with a separate piece of line (with the mainline laid alongside the hook).
I'm too sleepy to provide links but there are all kinds of illustrations, animations and videos online.

hey john
i'm not sure what it is,exactly that your looking for... but i think what you are looking for is the same knot you would use on an eyeless hook. actually a freshwater knot?
take the tag end through the eye and down the shank, make a loop at the bend, make five wraps around the shank and the line, then go back through the loop and tighteh.
i use this knot for hooks with a spade instead of an eye and when fishing smaller fish, when ocean fishing i will run the line through the eye before going back through the loop... but if you do that i am not sure you will be able to adjust it.

In your description you say run the tag throught the eye, but there is no eye on a spade hook. Did i miss somthing?
Thankjs

That friggin knot is impossible unless you have five hands! This is why i would like to find an easier knot that does the same thing or just figure out a trick/jig or somthing along those lines to tie it.
Thanks 69R

69R | the snell knot grips the shank, just like this knot. if you were using a spade hook, this is the knot to use. if you are using a hook with an eye it works the same way, the knot tightens against the eye instead of the spade. i thought you were looking for something you could adjust, tie the treble hook to the tag end and still be able to move (possibly) the single hook. when i use this knot ocean fishing, after i make the five wraps around the shank and the line i will run the tag end through the eye and then through the loop and tighten it. but you wouldn't be able to easily adjust it. if you make the five wraps around the shank and line and then through the loop (eliminating the second pass through the eye) this is how the knot was originally done when used on spade hooks, it can't fail and you might be able to adjust it. i was assuming you were going to tie the treble hook with the tag end of the line, not add a seperate line. i am not sure what it is your going to do, just going with the imagine in my mind by your discription.
i certainly don't claim to know it all, hell we could say don't know that much. Even though people do it all the time, i am of the opinion that one piece of line is stronger than one that has line added to it. So that is what i thought you were trying to do.

Buttchaser, first off thanks for the video...
secondly thanks for making me feel more normal. In that book it shows me a few steps that seem so easy but, just does not work. I was starting to feel like maybe i should just throw in the towel on that knot. Now i will try it again.
By the way watch that video you sent me, it is a little misleading also, particularly when you pass the main line through ring on hook. How you supposed to winde the lind arond the shank witht he mainline in the way?
Any ideas? Kinda funny.
