there was a post about this very topic not to long ago, sling a 1 oz torpedo and you'd be in the ball park for a healthy sized 'chovie
Keep in mind that chovies are much more fragile than dines

"Old school" anchovy practice...take one of the old spring type wooden clothes pins (yes...before clothes dryers) and take 1/2 of if (one of the wooden pieces), drill a hole in the end and tie it on...about the weight and size of a chove and the same "shape"...try casting with some wind fromt he side as it might be "on the slide"...you will feel pretty inept but with practice you'll be tossing them like a pro...if you can't find a clothspin, cut about 2" from a wooden pencil or 1/4" wooden dowel, and tie it on...about the same. Using a weight is ok but the size and shape of a piece of wood is more what you will be dealing with in a breeze...

Beat me to it, and prolly described it better than I could have......but this is spot on. I spent a few evenings down at the park with my 20# rig doing exactly this before my first albacore trip......and man o man, did it ever make a difference in the results.
I see this as one of the basic skills needed to be a successful offshore fisherman. If you can master this technique, you can cast just about any bait with enough finesse to put it where it needs to go.......

Clothes pin, that's how I learned. It's a lost art, I love when we have some alby fishing.
