Friday me and chunk are going on a yellowtail/mako shark trip aboad his beautifly renovated 14 foot aluminum boat. I bought a bait o matic for trolling and a couple shark leaders. Our plan is to head for the La jolla kelp and fish yellows and during the mid day stretch go looking for makos and kelps. I need some help as to what to use for chum and bait. I talked with Tim Linskey on the Aristokat out of Islandia sportfishing and he says freeze a bunch a chud and put some baits out on balloons. Is it more complicated then that, like are there areas makos prefer more then others?our range is maybe 12 miles offshore safely. Advice appreciated. oh yeah, no electronics on board, so don't give me all that water tempuature and GPS coordinate crap please. Thanks.

go 12 miles out.
6-8' of wire leader. Swivel at the top. Crimped and all that. 12/0 hook. slab of meat, 4-5lb live Yellowtail is best, live horse mackie is fun too. Balloon tied 4' from the hook. On the wire leader incase they bite the balloon...
If you see one on the water but don't have a wire leader you can use IRON. Just pin on a few sardines and throw it to them. Make sure to set the hook quick so they don't inhale it like Kep and I have had them do many times. Good irons lost to them too!
Put chum in water. You want the chum to be consistant. Not heavy then light, heavy and light. Bad. Consistant good.
Sit and watch for fins to show up.
Many times they will come from underneath and chew on the outboard.
Once hooked they usually come to the boat hot.
Gaff in the gills and cut deep behind their head. You want to cut their spinal cord. Once you do you'll see them just start twitching.
Throw them in to the boat.
Cut from ass to head along the belly. Throw all the guts in to the chum bag. wash all blood out of boat. Very very messy, not for the clean boat freaks. Catch another one.
DO NOT REMOVE FINS OR JAW WHILE ON THE WATER. It's a NO NO with the DFG.
To clean just start cutting straight through their skin making doughnuts and steaks. BBQ that shit up. It's one of my favorites.

PS where's your gps? I have one that I might sell. Hand held. But I'd have to go through over 200 waypoints in SD and delete them .

Not bird shit, wrong jigs.
Baby shit, ok...
GPS, I have an old Garmin that tracks like 5-6 sat's
but thats good enough unless your in the fog or trying to find a
small rock. General areas, and get you home in 1/4 - 1/2 mile visabillity? It's perfect.

14 foot aluminum sounds small. I'm picturing one of those Sears's jobs.
