Jon, you could probably tie direct or use a short section of leader (100 to 150 pound). The lures action may be effected by how it is rigged. It may swim better with a knot or leader snugged tight to the eye versus a loop. Heavy leader may effect it's swimming action as well. You may have to experiment...

I would tie direct on 80 pound if there were no wahoo around...

These are by far the best wahoo trolling lures that I have ever found. Just incredible. They are called Hooker Intruders. If you can find one, buy it. The large size (11 inch) works the best with the eggplant color (black/purple) my favorite.

The company went out of business yet still holds the patent to the design. I paid $60 each before the company shut down.
