I don't mean to highjack but I'm still curious if any of you guys can actually meter the bottom on some of these high spots. Spent a decent amount of time on most of them and I can't ever recall actually picking up the bottom to say, oh look we're near the peak. I'm using a Raymarine set up, usually run dual 50 and 200 hz frequencies. Just curious.

PS: I think the post is all good. This site is supposed to be about learning and helping everyone catch more fish, constructive topics like this do just that. Granted it may not be in the right forum, but the titles good enough for people to search for it (that is if people ever care to start using the search feature on here).

Yes, topography of the bottom. They are usually sea mounts and it's the depth of mounts in fathoms. Some names are unique like the "dumping grounds" in that they used to dump some sort of waste out there (nuclear I think) or the San Salvador knoll, which my guess was named after some dude named Salvador. Condom bank, airplane, butterfly...no clue why they're called that, but I'm sure there's some good reason.

So you want an educated response here it is. A "fathom" utilized for a measurement of water depth. It is = to 2 yards or more simply for you... 6 feet. These "spots" 302, 181, etc directly correlate with the depth. For example. The 302 or more commonly known as Kidney bank, has a depth of exactly 1812 feet. This = 302 Fathoms. 181 has a depth of 1086. These are spots that have been known for years to produce a lot of activity. If you have garmin products and aren't exactly sure where these points are, I would be more than happy to send you my waypoints with all these spots. You can also utilize this converter to help you out too.

I think the best thing to do is buy a $20 chart with all the spots listed.....that way as your traveling you can mark your spot on the chart and see where you've gone and where your going to......
