| So Cal Dorado! - How far out?
Hey all, I am interested in targeting Dorado from my Kayak here in southern california. If i remeber right thier was some dorado in close last year during summer within 3-4 miles fishing kelp patties. a spear fisherman i knew got some from his Zodiac around 3 miles out of dana.
Any tips on finding Dorado out of Dana/laguna area? how far out do i have to paddle? And whats the likeliness of finding them? and what water conditions and water temp should i look for?
Thanks - Gino

Depends if the water warms up a lot or not. You're not going to see dorado about around that area to often, especially not close in. Good luck with that buddy. Maybe if the El Nino talk people are jabbing about is true you might be able to do it.

Got a couple small dodo's off my dinghy last year - 4-5 miles out of Oside harbor. Lot's of fun, but that's way too long of a paddle for me. I'd use a mothership if I were you.
PS - it's very hard to spot paddy's sitting that low - you basically have to just happen to run right into them

Getting dodos 3-5 miles offshore has historically been a rarity. It's happened a few times in the last few years but I wouldn't count on it happening every year.
Look for blue, 70-72+ water...

3 to 6 miles off La Jolla sometime in July would be my bet, depends on water conditions.
Get a hand held VHF and ask for help finding the right area or paddy, hard to spot paddies from a kayak. You might get lucky slow trolling an area, hope your arms are in good shape and you have a spot or similar life saving device.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I dont forsee them showing up to much this year. I have caught a couple of the half-day boats out of dana some years back. I dont remeber it being an el nino year either.

put kayak on boat, go find patty holding dorado and fish it. You would have to do a lot a paddling aroung in a kayak to stumble on a dorado in so cal.
BTW its a kelp Patty not Paddy as in the nickname for Patrick.

Last year I was 1.3 miles due west out of Mission Bay. Pulled 6 (largest was 18lbs) off that patty. Could still see the Point Loma kelp.
