Jet Ski

Get a jet ski, tow the kayak out, and hit the kelps. Tag the kayak and fish from the ski. Have guys fishing the pwc out as far as 25 mi.

Seriously, be safe.

Dorado

The Hook is right, right off the tip of Point Loma about 2-3 miles from shore. Large kelp patty in water around 70 degrees. A couple of folks caught dorado's last year from a kayaks but it was rare. One guy (Josh) used his hobie and peddled to the north nine mile bank. Keep in mind that that's 14 miles in one direction and not recommended without a Will/Insurance. Gabe fishing with me and The Hook did a motherload trip (center console) to the area and Gabe was able to catch one off of his kayak at the North 9 on a very productive patty. Same trip while returning home from the south 9 we found a patty that we were able to pull over 10 doritos. Would of caught off of our kayaks but did not want to unload and load kayaks again.

Hey Gino,
Every year's different, obviously. Last year a friend and I baited up at the point and went out W as far as the Dana Pt buoy then bent back to the S'ward. We found them under birds and we had them swarming, and about a mile inside of the sportboats, all alone. Ended up being a 21mile day. Year before that same friend and I did an 18mile day from Fisherman's in Laguna; basically a big triangle W-SE-N for nada. Found a scum line w/ patties but nothing there.

Just me, but I would find a partner you trust and that can paddle distances, and have all your safety gear. Horn, flares, E-rations etc in a ditch kit plus the normal safety gear you always take like pfd and vhf. Good luck. I'm waiting for the water to try again this year. Let me know if you need a yak buddie.

Last year I was loading up on a patty real close to MB. First one was 18#. I laughed as I watched people going from the channel to the LJ kelp beds.
