Had a few prople ask about my winter project boat.
It is a 1973 40' Pacemaker Sportfisher.
A little history of the boat. It was owned be Keehi Marine. They reglassed the entire boat. The reason they stopped and sold the boat?? It was then sold twice with no work done.
I purchased the boat and am in the process of gathering all of the parts to get it going. I have 2 Detroit 471's (Just rebuilt)..
I should have it on the water running in January sometime..

In the next issue of lawai'a and Ulua tagging nexsletter check out my friends story, its pretty unbelievable. Him and his girlfriend caught an ulua last year on Oahu, tagged/released it and a year later when they moved up to Molokai they ended up catching the same fish. No bullsh*t either. I dont think its ever happened before and it may never happen again. I told him that they had a better chance of winning the lottery or megabucks but I know that catching the same fish on different islands is waaaaayyyyyy more satisfying.

Okay it's a new moon, no, not the movie, I don't watch eerie stuff like that, creeps me out. As everyone knows the makani has been singing its song for several weeks now with over 20 knots daily. I noticed the past few days it seemed to die down later in the evening, so off I went, to give the Akule a try. After searching a few old spots to no avail, went to another old spot and bingo, somebody stay home. Dropped anchor and fished till 2 am as I filled up my cooler, which is my quota.

I was solo, so a full cooler for an old guy like me is a definite accomplishment. Sure, can catch more fish since they were still biting, but why? Only can eat so much. There's always another trip to try again, nice to know there may still be some fish that you didn't catch, waiting for you. Mahalo ke Akua for the blessings and a safe trip.

Duh, forgot to reel in my lucky line and got it in one of my props when I went to pull anchor, so had to come in on one engine, no damage as I turned the engine off when I knew what happened so it wouldn't break the prop seal, whew, I hate when I forget stuff like that. Could it be something to do with age? Nah, I was just tired and plain forgot, heh heh.

AJ, the spool worked great, see pix, just bulky.

all this talk about private bouys, what about the state FADS, the state is done replaceing them, once they are gone thats it, how come no one cares about that, the J bouy has been gone almost a year from north shore haleiwa and when i called last year to report it i was told that the fad program was done and once the fads were gone they would not be replaced, stop giving the private guys a hard time and contact the state about our fad bouys before they are all gone.

The weather has been so bad for the past 2-3 weeks that I haven't spent any money on gas. With the money I saved along with the recent bad news of a fellow fisherman, it wasn't hard to convince the spouse that I was going to buy a personal locator beacon (PLB). I already had an older 406 EPIRB on my boat but thought that in an emergency/backup situation, the best thing to have is a wearable PLB since I occasionally go out fishing by myself.

There are two main small PLBs on market that I know of. The ACR Aqualink and the McMurdo Fast Find. Fast find is about $300 while ACR is about $350-375.

I ended up buying the ACR Aqualink which just came out about 2 months ago. Below are pictures comparing the new PLB with my older EPIRB.

The Aqualink has a built in GPS receiver so it will transmit your coordinates when activated. Coast guard will be able to find you in less than 30 minutes.

I am very happy with the purchase and will definitely be wearing the PLB on me when I go out alone (along with my automatic life jacket).

If you don't already have a EPIRB or at least a PLB on your boat, please get one! It is the best marine investment you will ever make for you and your family.

So, while we wait for the next time we can go fishing, might as well look back and enjoy some of this year's memorable catches. I was wondering if you fellow BD'ers out there are interested in sharing some pics of your best catches in 2009. Although 2009 has not been my greatest year for fishing overall, there was still some great catches that I'll remember for a long time....like my 75lb Ono caught this past May. Is anybody else game? Maybe we can call it the Best of BloodyDecks 2009! Here's mine.....;)

Fishing by the Hawaiian moon calendar.

An excellent thread was started recently on another fishing forum I regularly participate in. It had to do with planning fishing trips around the best days indicated on the Hawaiian calendar for fishing. One of the members on that forum worked on some graphs indicating days and confirmed catches for one year. The information is by no means conclusive, but the possible trends toward good and not so good fishing are a little too interesting for me to ignore. A few days per lunar month in particular, have large spikes in Pelagic catches. I will not reveal what days these are for the simple fact that I respect his contribution and he did post it in the forums secret section.

The varied conditions on each productive moon phase day, in each month throughout the year, should be enough to rule out the argument that more people fish and therefore catch in favorable i.e. calm conditions. There were most likely a wide range of conditions/tides on the productive days throughout the year.

Does anybody here, weather and schedule permitting of course, look to the Hawaiian calendar for guidance to fish productive moon phase days? If so, how much do you think the moon phase affects your fishing? In my experience. When as many influencing factors are in alignment for a given fishing day, the results are usually fish in da box;) I thought we could start some discussion on the matter here....any takers?
