My son joined me this week at Rio Vista, (on the Sacramento River) and we fished Tue-Thurs at Decker Island and also down at my honey hole on Suisun Bay.

We were skunked both days at Decker, but fortunately Thursday dawned
calm and sunny, making a cruise down to Suisun possible. We fished my
honey hole near Roe and Ryer Islands. As the last two hours of our fishing time for the week approached, we finally got that little sturgeon nibble. Fish On!

She gave us a great fight, breaching twice and giving Dean quite a thrill as he fought his first sturgeon ever. She weighed in at 38 pounds and measured 55 inches. She fell for - as usual - eel.

The Crab season started Nov. 7th for us sport crabbers and Nov. 15 for the commercial boys. Nov. 7th was too rough for us but by the following Saturday the seas were coming down and the wind was forcast to be light for Sunday the 15th. We arrived at Half Moon Bay Harbor around 8am, baited our nine crab traps and three spot prawn traps, went out about five miles to 150 feet of water and started dropping the traps. By 10:00am the traps were in the water and we went back to shore for four hours to sit in the sun. In the off season I re-built my home-made crab puller and changed the wire from 14 ga. to 8 ga. and a new foot switch, the puller had alot more power, this was good because the second trap had around 30 crabs with 16 keepers. WE all went home with limits and I'll bet we sent back another 50 keepers and 100 too small. Yes the crabbing was great but no super big jumbos. WE steamed 20 at a time Maryland style with old bay, salt , pepper, and vinegar for 20 minutes. The meat is firm and the crabs are full, good eats tonight! No prawns in the new traps, it was a test, to get the spot prawns I may have to go much deeper, like 600 ft.

My fishin' buddy John joined me for a trip to Brannan and Decker
Island. We dropped anchor about 0830 at the same spot as the past few weeks, just off Decker Island and as close to the shipping channel as we
could.

Around 1030 he set the hook into a lazy sturgeon who didn't want to
fight. In five minutes a 55" sturgeon was at the side of the boat. He
was so lazy he didn't make even one run. He was a good looking fish,
but acted very weird. We released him and kept at it 'til sundown, but
no more action for us.

A nearby boat caught a 75" and released it, and another just above the
minimum size, by what we could see, and kept it.

Another great sturgeon day!

OK Nor Cal its time to start getting serious about the MLPA coming to your area.

We all need to ban together, as one, and boycott fishing licenses next year. We fisherman brought in over $63,000,000 to the state in license fees. This will get the states attention !!!

You need to start writing all your local Legislators about these planned closures and let them know that you will only vote for the people who stand up against the closures. You need to get mass public backing !!! The only way to stop this BS is by getting voters on your side.

Boycott licenses, ban together, and start KICKING SOME ASS !!!!

As in years past, this crab season started by getting the gear ready the week before.

Some of my gear is showing it's age, and I'm afraid a few of the pots will be staying in the ocean at the end of this season.

So the weekend finally came. We went to Manny's the night before, and loaded all the bait cars, cages, and pens, with bait. Loaded 26 pots onto Diabla, and the next day launched the pots, not without a talking to by the harbor master. He thought it was too rough to go out. It wasn't.

I like the peace sign.

Saw the Concrete butt pirate out there.

Nice string Manny.

Booty. Poor thing needs to get out of the slip.

Saw this "Guy" at the dock.

So with the gear in, it was time to pull some crab. We had Manny, Manny's neighbor Roberto, Rod, Mel, and myself. There was some big water out there, but very doable.

First pull.

Then we settled into the grind. Pull, measure, into the hold, repeat.

Check out the wall of water behind Mel. Did I mention it was big!

This makes me happy.

Poor Betty caught the crabs.

This is what 50 crab looks like!
Robert and Scott met us at the slip and gave us a hand getting everything up to the parking lot where Johnny law was waiting.

I was a little upset that he was putting our nice clean crabs in the dirt, but that's what he gets paid to do. All checked out, and it was time to get our grub on.

Chillin!

Even McLovin showed up, WITH PIZZA!

Things get a little fuzzy at this point. Val and Steve showed up, Richard, and Gary were there, Will and his lovely wife was there. Hell I even partied with Mike Guraudo. At one point we went down to the Concrete Jim and had some mighty fine cocktails. Thanks Jim. Then I went back up and partied with the BS group. Great bunch of people! Majek even showed up.

I left the harbor around midnight, and had to be back at 7:30 to do another pull. Man, I woke up all fucked up. I gave Graz, (Fred's), a ride down to the harbor, but had no intention of getting on the boat. After much verbal punishment, I came on board. I knew it was going to be bad. We had a big crew today. Manny, his Neighbor Roberto, Rod, Mel Nelson, Graziano and me.

Water was a little better today, but just a little.

Fortunatly the pots were plugged.

Then it hit me. Headache, hangover, no food, and lot's of coffee=

Man I felt like shit, but did I get any sympathy? Hell no!
They just kept crabbing.

I just got back from three nights at Brannan Island Park (near Rio Vista on the Sacramento River). I fished Tuesday through Thursday, and caught a total of three sturgeon.

Tuesday was a blank, but a flat calm and beautiful day on the Sacramento River.

Wednesday was breezy, but after aborting a trip to Suisun due to a very rough river, I came back to the same old spot off Decker. During the afternoon I reeled in two sturgeon, both females (I'm pretty sure) and both about 66" or more and probably close to 70 lbs. I released both to continue the mission upriver.

Thursday my friend, Willie, joined me and after a few unsuccessful sets to what seemed to be sturgeon bites, we got onto one tough ol' male sturgeon. After Willie got it to the boat he measured in at 55" and weighed 31 Lbs. That was Willie's first sturgeon and he's now joined me on the downward spiral to uselessness.

All fish fell for eel.

This week's three day sturgeon safari just off the ship channel near Decker Island, just south of Rio Vista, Ca on the Sacramento River was unusually productive!

I had five hooked over the three days, and three of them to the boat. I released two at opposite ends of the slot - one about 46" and maybe 25 pounds, another around 66" and 65+ pounds, I'd guess. I couldn't get a good measure of him in the water, so released him to pursue his pleasure upriver at the spawn. I kept one at 49" and 30 pounds. (That's my second kept sturgie of the year; I now have one tag left.)Every one of them took the same old lamprey eel I've been carving on for six months - actually longer than that, I think. I've frozen and thawed it several times, and it still works great! Figuring the time one eel lasts, at $40 per, they're still the cheapest sturgeon bait around!

Wow! I'm still buzzed. It was an exciting three days of brawling with the mighty sturgeon.
