It offers solitude and proximity to the fishing – but primarily stealth and the ability to fish in extremely skinny water.
Some adventurous souls however continue to push the envelope – we have even experienced anglers in Guatemala launching their Yak from a mother ship 40 miles out to chase sailfish. One of the first and best known pioneers of “extreme kayaking” is Florida resident Kayak Willie who became a legend, catching sailfish in the Florida Keys at will from his fifty-pound kayak. Using live ballyhoo as bait, he hooked sailfish in as little as forty-five feet of water. One towed him twelve miles before breaking off. Sharks were an occasional hazard, as were skittering sailfish that nearly speared him while he floated inches above the waterline. Even catching bait could be dangerous. Leaning over to unhook a blue runner, Willie was about to grab his bait when a barracuda lunged and cut the fish in half. Asked what his highest priority tip was for this kind of fishing – he replied “Velcro”…………a wonderful invention that enables the kayak fisherman to physically attach gear to the hull. Of course some might argue that this should always take second place to paddle clips; you can always chase the bait bucket that may have fallen over, but try chasing your paddle in a 2 know current using the palms of your hand !
No kayak fishing to report in Guatemala this past week, but we did experience a brief burst of extreme fishing. Once the front had moved through (the effects of IDA), the blue water settled down and the fish were biting aggressively. For a couple of days building up to the new moon we were raising over 40 sailfish per day, but things have now cooled off somewhat, raising 15-20 fish per boat. There has been green water to the South, with our boats having to travel over 40 miles to find good blue water and consistent raises, although the numbers have reduced to the high single digits for raises.
The winter almanac is forecasting the coldest winter in North America in a decade – so this is a great year to book in for a fishing trip to the calm waters and sunshine of Guatemala while we still have dates available ! fish for sale around town..........Peanut Tuna, bottom fish, lobster and crab.
They use nets or troll a line(by hand). Did not rent a fishin boat here.......

On to La Union (just south of San Fernando)for 8 days..............I love this place! Hooked up with a bonca boat for tomorrow..........we got bait today......shrimp....local bait fish.....and Squid............had to talk him into the Squid.......so will both troll and bottom fish and I'm renting his brothers pole ($300 peso's)........cost $250 pesos for bait and $1000 peso's for the bonca boat and guide....all day..........Big spender........ah.......

Hafa Adai, My name is Leon, I drive ships for the US Gov and it takes me all over the world. Im in and out of Guam alot, but Im there often enough to go fishing.

Guam, a little island closer to the Phillipines than Hawaii, sitting by itself in the big open western pacific north of Micronesia, has great fishing. Marlin, Sailfish, Sharks, Yellow Fin Tuna, Dogtooth and Bigeye, GTs, Mahi, Wahoo, Snapper....

Probably one of the few places in the world you can catch blue marlin from shore. In many places the water is a hundreds of feet deep within reach of a cast. From the bottom of the adjacent marianas trench to the tallest mountain on guam is a staggering 40,000 feet.

Luckily for Guam it also has many shallow banks 10-80 miles offshore.

But just trolling off the beaches and cliffs will be sufficient. I havent been here long enough to muscle onto a marlin yet but I will eventually. The fish here dont grow as large as some other places, and some places have more tuna, but for a hawaii-copycat its pretty decent.

SO here are my recent Guam catches. In the future I will limit my trip reports to here rather than splattering the board with this drivel. I also have some exciting news in the next few weeks.

What a frikken awesome island. I know there are a few Guamanians and Chamorros here...

For a population of about 14 million living in a country roughly the size of Tennessee, golf remains largely an elitist sport, but that is starting to change. The country is home to five courses and to date has comfortably accommodated the country’s two thousand or so active players.

The most recent addition to this stable of International courses is La Reunion located just 11 miles outside the old capital and world heritage site of Antigua.

The course is based within the 1380—acres of a former coffee plantation and in the shadows of four towering volcanoes—Agua, Fuego, Acatenango, and Pacaya. It has been appropriately named “Fuego Maya” or Mayan Fire – and was designed by renowned course architect Pete Dye. The course is relatively long, although even an average golfer should be able to complete the round in under 4 hours.

Although lacking the links (excuse pun) to the Royal & Ancient, there are indigenous links to the ancient Mayan calendar, which consists of 20 months of 18 days each. The final 5 days of the lunar calendar are then consumed by “Wayeb” which is held as a sacred time for relaxation and contemplation for the coming journey or the following calendar – much as the golfers’ consider their return to the challenges of the course or their next tee time.

Despite its only now emerging golfing population, Guatemala is starting to display its talents on the International golf scene – the country recently qualifying for the first time ever in an International event with the success of two budding stars Pablo Acuña and Alejandro Villavicencio who will represent the country at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup to be held in China November 27-30 which has a prize of $5.5 million.

The fishing this past week has ranged from outstanding to tough – as has the weather ! The storm that is now approaching the Gulf Coast has been busy pushing fronts across all of Central America – and Guatemala was quick to catch a cold ! Early in this past week we have been seeing days where 20-30 billfish raised was the norm – but as soon as the front and the weather came in, the seas built and unfortunately the fishing slowed. The Netland group saw decent fishing their first day, with a half dozen sailfish and a good sized Blue Marlin that took over two hours to bring to the boat for release.

Following days however brought ever increasing seas, and most boats stayed closer to shore – either splitting the day with some inshore fishing, or searching for Dorado and sailfish at about 25 miles.

The weather has now passed, and with the calmer seas the bait is now concentration again – so we are hopeful to see consistent fishing more on a par to the early part of last week than the latter days.

Well, we are still waiting for the long-awaited start to our season. October came and went and no billfish came. November must deliver the goods, fish that is!

We had persistent reports, more like rumours, of a sailfish run, but we did not see any, although we fished hard every week. Except for yet another record.

The smallest sailfish yet seen on Wayward Wind must have gone every ounce of 10 lbs. We free-spooled at least six times as the small fish tried again and again to eat Mr. Purple, almost set the hook once, and then I'm sure I heard the great Mr.Purple say, as he shook his head, "Gerrof little fellow and come back when you've grown bigger."

We did have some fun on the reef, 'fun' and 'reef' two words not normally seen in the same sentence, but beggars cannot be choosers, and we registered a variety of trevally or jacks if you prefer. The fish are horse-eye, black and bar jacks. The bar being a speciality of Mr. Cole.

So, enough of all this jollity and back to the serious business of catching some serious fish.
