So I have been wanting to take the boy out on a boat now fishing for sometime but since I dont have my own boat its a little tough to convince any of my buddies to "sacrifice" their day to play capt and not fish full speed and deal with the 1,000 questions not to mention additional safety measures that you dont even think about when its just adult veteran anglers.

Anyway my buddy Jason(1:11) took the time to take us out on his 18' deep V to lake mead for some great striper action.

It took us awhile to find the shad but once we did a few tosses with the cast net and we were fishing. The bite was pretty much wide open and my son got to reel in just about every fish. We ended up with 20+ fish from 1-3lbs with a lot lost right at the boat. Since Jason just got back from his 15 day he got Kyle goin on the rail technique with the rod under his leg. Enjoy the pics.

Thanks again Jason!

My cousin and I made it to Laguna Niguel Lake's Trout opener (haven't fished this like in 12 years!)...we figured we would keep the streak by going to Irvine's opener last week, Laguna Niguel's opener today, and Mission Viejo's opener this Saturday. Anyways...the fishing was great, lots of healthy thick rainbows with full tails and deep color! Definitely nothing like Irvine lake though...the water was very cloudy and stagnant in areas. Trout weren't receptive to the sc shiners, kastmasters, spinners, etc like they were in Irvine...i think it really had to do with the water clarity... we resorted to fishing the bottom with some powerbait, and instant hits all over (shore fisherman hitting limits easy with powerbait), we each caught our limits within an hour or two...green or pink crappie jigs carolina rigged fished off the bottom worked for a couple as well . most fish were 1 to 2 lb range, biggest one was a lil over 2.5 lbs. Definitely still a fun lake with stocked fish

Pay to fish, stocked lakes in Japan, that is.
When I lived in Cali, I used to luv fishing the pay to fist (fish) lakes like Irvine, and the RP (Regional Park) lakes like El Dorado, Peck Road, and Yucaipa (more on this one later).
For the most part the fishing is very similar to what you have in Cali, with one exception--no bait fishing is allowed. Some places will let you use lure scent--so I use Unibutter, and Hot Sauce on occasion.

The entry fees for a day pass are about 20 to 30 bucks, Uncle Sam.
How much is Irvine, these days?

The lakes I fish range from moderately clear to green/brown stain, such as you have at Irvine.

The Fish

Rainbow, and rainbow trout hybrids are the most common catch, with the average size being one to two pounds.
Other species include the Hora Trout, brown brown trout, brook trout, amago, and the biggest of them all, the Itoh Trout.

Attachment 166020
I fish about about half and half spinning and flyfishing.
When lure fishing, I like using jerkbaits, with ones made by Megabass, and
Bassday (The Sugar Minnow!) among my favorites.
This is some type of rainbow hybrid that I caught on a Tiemco minnow.
Attachment 166021
Some fish have full tails, while others do not. The bottom part of this 'bows tail has been clipped, but it still gave me grief on 3 lb. line.
My rod looks "photo shopped" in the picture, but it just looks funky as it is "floating" on top of the ice that sometimes rings the lakes I fish.

Attachment 166022
Some of the lakes have "holdover" fish, and grow fairly large. This hen I caught fly fishing, using a streamer. I put on a glove, and "tailed" the fish, rather than net it, as she was full of eggs, and fish that you net, contrary to what many think, get beat up pretty good.

This little lake rarely has may people fishing at it, as it can be pretty tough, and getting skunked is not unheard of (especially by someone like me).

Attachment 166023
The brook trout that they stock usually have full tails, and are pretty "smart"--most of the ones I have caught have been fishing the fly.
This is my second best one, at 20 inches.

Attachment 166024
I release all my fish, but in most lakes you can take five fish home. Some of the waters are pretty clear/clean, and the fish are reported to taste quite good.
This is my best brookie, obviously not released, at 22 inches.
I was having fun catching normal (10 to 12 inch) brookies on tiny #18 to #26 flies (emergers). I could see the fish dart at my fly, but not hit my two pound leader, so I switched to 1 lb. fluoro leader. This big brookie came out of nowhere, and slammed my fly on my 3 wt. flyrod. I fought the fish for about 20 min. and finally landed it. As much as I tried, I could not revive the fish, and it died dead.
I brought it back to my tackle store, where by chance a guy that mounted (not sexually) fish offered to do the $800 mount for free, if I would display it in my shop, along with his company brochures.
It turned out to be a good deal for both of us, as at least ten customers in my shop had their fish mounted after seeing mine, and taking the brochure. He called two years later, and offered to do another fish for free, but I am not big on fish mounts (that was my first, and last?).
I did, however, continue to refer him clients.

BTW, that is the exact color of the fish, when it was alive--it did not have the typical bright brookie colors.

Attachment 166025

This is a guy named "Scratch", the only man I know that carries an MP5 (legally). The fish he is holding is an Itoh, and it is the largest native trout species in Japan. This fish, was of course a planter, but they are pretty cool--and get to 20 pounds. They are fish eaters, so most target them with big jerkbaits, or crankbaits.
Attachment 166026
But not too big!
My only claim to fame is introducing big swimbait fishing to Japan.
We started using these bass lures, trout imitators at the pay lakes, and the fish creamed them. It was because of me, and my prostaff using these big (7 to 12 inch) big swimbaits that most lakes now have a 4 inch maximum on lure length. Oops.
Trout are trout eaters--this is my pro staff, and licensed/bonded pro bass guide Mabu with a nice specimen on the MS Slammer (pre 4 inch rule).

Attachment 166027
This is a "Horai Trout" (named after the Horai area in Western Japan), which looks similar to a rainbow, but with no spots.

G-Style Tackle
Attachment 166028
I have way more rods and reels than my ability merits.
Basically, I would break the dozen trout spinning rods I have down into three areas, all UL or super UL line ratings. From the left, my short (5 to 6 feet) rods, for spinners and spoons. I usually use a 1000 size reel--I am not a big fan of the 500 size for lure fishing due to the small spool diameter, and limited line retrieved per turn of the reel handle.
The middle, with slightly longer rear grips are my all purpose UL 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 rods. I use a 1000 to 2000 size reel, with 2 to 5 lb. line, usually fluoro made by Sunline, or my hands down favorite "Darm" fluoro (Performance Tackle has this).
To the right is "long rod" category, for fishing mini jigs, and fly and bubble.
The one pictured is 10 foot 3 inch, and is for 1 to 3 lb. line.
I usually use a 2,500 size reel on these long rods, mostly for balance, and the larger spool diameter helps me toss 1/32 and 1/64 size lures a mile.

Attachment 166029
I build all my own rods, but lets be serious, this is not rocket science, and an inexpensive rod and reel will get the job done just fine.
That said, the cheapest rod I use is $520.
I have the disease. Bad.
In recent years, I have been using the Fuji Titanium micro guides, and they work really well for this type of fishing with light line. The reason you can not see the guides very well toward the tip is that they are size 04.
This is the Shimano Twin Power reel on my 10.3 footer. The blue line is my backing--to this I can wind on a 100 yard spool of fluoro, and it will fill it perfectly. I only replace/respool the top 100 yards of line.

The Twin Power is the rank below a Stella, and runs about $400. I have used the Stellas, and they are nice, but most of my reels are below the cost of a Twin Power.
Spinning reels have come a long way, and you can buy a really adequate reel with several bearings for a Benji these days.

Attachment 166031
I am in the process of building another trout rod this week--with a machined red and gold aluminum reel seat, with a hard wood insert.
After deciding that I would no longer purchase (spinning) reels over $400...

Attachment 166032
Then I saw this Shimano Sephia, at $450.
I think I will try to tell my wife that it is the only (red) Shimano reel that matches my new rod?
Attachment 166033
Pay Lake fishing for trout is so popular here in Japan that both Shimano and Daiwa have made reels specifically for this purpose. Pay Lake fishing is called "Area" fishing here in Japan.
These are about $500.

Attachment 166034
I was looking at these Shimano BBX Technium reels--it is hard to believe that someone would pay over 900 dollars for a small spinning reel, but this is Shimano's answer for those who need more 'reel' than the Stella.
Go figure.

It's been a while since I've been fishing in the duct. The summer in Bako is too hot and the moss grows crazy. Since the weathers finally cooled and I'm tired of watching the Raiders suck. I decided to go scout the duct on Sun.

I did't go prepared and only took 2 large lures. 1 bucktail and 1 1oz rattle trap. I went to a couple gates and tossed a few. I went to a canal that feeds the duct where I've caught some bass in the past.
After harassing some smaller bass with the 1 oz rap I got whacked. I was'nt ready and did't set the steel. I saw the 4lber head for the bottom and pop goes my lure. After many more casts I knew she wouldn't be back.

At work today I could think of nothing else but going back out to the duct and looking for this bass. Today I came prepared, 15 crawlers and a couple of my Bass gettin lures.

After about 1 hr and many small ones I was asked to leave by the canal security. (he was a nice guy though) So I spent the rest of my time at the duct.

I've always heard of LMB in the duct but never caught any myself before today. The Kern River was running into the duct a couple yrs ago for about 8 months.

Well, today I was in the right place at the right time. After catching about 20 1-2lbers on the 10 crawlers I had left, I switched to my 2-3ft diving LC jerk minnow and whack, whack, whack. I thought this one was a striper. Reeled it in and yelled Hell Yeah!

Can't wait to go back. Gunna take my 9 yr old nephew Sat :)

The wife is 9 and a 1/2 months prego so she was not down with me being on the water if something happened. I had an itch that needed to be scrached so trout it was.

Got to the lake at 6 am to find about 20 cars lined up. Shit the derby is going on.

By the time I sat in line to pay the new 5.00 parking fee and permit fee I was in trout cove by 6:45.

First cast produced a nice Nebraska tail walker on a green mini jig. Caught another 3 for a total of 4 and was off the lake by 11:00. All my fish came on the jigs. The guys fishing power bait and power worms were doing well all over trout cove.

The lake is going to be a zoo the next two days for the derby. I think all the tagged fish were caught. The largest fish when I left was around 6.5#.

Got back in town from Louisiana trying to transition back from fishing 100lb monster gar back to largemouth. So they stocked the local lake I decieded to take all the dust off my big baits and try to get my first swimbait fish for the season. Saw some trout getting pushed off some tule's took a short walk down the bank casted my Huddleson ROF 5 trout pattern let it sink slow crank about half way in WHAMMO!!! Game on and Game over! Worked the bank a bit longer got whacked again but unfortunately I did not have my trap hook rigged. I was super stoked this my first day putting in work with the swimbait and it payed off.

first off yall are some well rounded sprortsmen. what finally got me off the couch to finally get up and say my piece was everyones initiative about fishing closures. I for one have a family of 4 plus me who fish and hunt regularly. we have all decied we are on board about not getting our new fishing lic. next yr.

now for my striper report....

there I was throwin the BBZ at DVL 2 weeks ago early morn. fish on. great battle from shore. amazing swallowed it from tail forward. only thing showing was gills and head of swimmy. ate it ass forward. cant wait to see what it will be like after more trout get dumped and lake rises. big points were working for me. since then have been there every friday and have had several followers, but did not committ.
