Heads up that there's a mile long drift net right on the 302 high spot.
Spent a great day on completely flat seas with a couple friends, just dragging feathers across the 302 and down to the 425, stopping on kelps, looking for any wayward gamefish that might happen to be lost, before loading up on assortment of rockfish near North Island.
Water clear, a little blue yet, and in the high 63°F range. Definitely better water color and way more life at the 302 than near the 425.
Amazing bait from EB right now...perfect sized lively deans...didn't lose one all day.
Mike, boat owner, and I sent friend Gary home with a big bag of rockfish fillets for ceviche, plus a couple of sandabs since he likes them, but never cooked them before.
Scrubbed up with De-Fishing Soap before heading home just at sunset. Tough living here in Southern California, enduring these weak Santa Anas in the middle of November.

Well, the fat lady may be on stage and clearing her throat, but she still isn't ready to pull the plug on the season -- yet anyway!

It looks like we're the only guys still fishing, as we were told by the EB boys that we're definitely the last of the tuna fisherman! Without any recent information whatsoever, we were torn between running out to the 60/Mushroom where we've been catching tuna late last month and early this month, or check out the break below the 390. Due to a later than desired start, we decided to shoot down to the break below the 390.

At about 7:30 a.m., the Mexican flag went off and we had a late season albie on deck. That was followed by a bait fish.

While water conditions weren't ideal (blue, but not purple water and only 63.4 degrees), we decided to work the area hard before moving on. Unfortunately, there was no volume and after thoroughly working the area we fished south and then back to the east before turning the boat back up the line.

Best water conditions were at the 371 where we chased a large pod of dolphin for nothing but a good show and fished about 1/2 dozen kelps for nothing. Water on the 371 was a little warmer (64.1) and the color was better, but the fish weren't there to enjoy the conditions.

We did come across one other fisherman that had an incredible amount of birds in his wake outside of the 302:

Here's a photo of our trusty deckhand, Tom.

Weather was beautiful for this time of year -- sunny and nice seas, with only a slight bump on it and almost no wind until the afternoon.

Brother Frank is convinced the fish are still on the outside, so we may have one trip left in us. :It__s_Outta_Here:

The fishin was fair, not what you would consider good for the area. The boat is not for the people accustom to the amenities of a long ranger. Rick, the owner/captain, will go to any length to get out to slay fish. The morning of the departure for the trip, there were only 5 reservations He was going to go with the 5, so I signed up. The other boats that were going to fish Colnett cancelled, so Rick left with 17 people, still lots of room to fish. Early in the rockcod season, he realizes he has got to get out there to try as many of his numbers as he can to see if they are still holding fish. He is my kind of skipper. There were a lot of happy campers on the Pearl. He is running every weekend thru March.

I've not heard of anyone catching a porpoise but I did....

We were drifting on the tuna grounds and I dropped a megabait with a big squid down about 300ft on a Gusa rod and an Accurate Boss with 30lb topshot and 65lb spectra...

About 3:00am I heard the clicker screaming and ran out on the deck, I picked up the rod and just stood there as I got spooled, it went all the way to the spool...

I pushed the drag to full and started pulling...back and forth for 30 minutes, spooled twice...

I started screaming for everyone to wake up and help me out....

Alex took the rod for 30 mins and we thought we had a seal but we were 80 miles offshore...

I took the rod again and started gaining line, tangled spectra came in sight and we got a glimpse.....

After the realization we had a porpoise we went into rescue mode and got the young mammal onboard, cut free and released..
We arrived on the bank mid morning, and had a steady bite on big quality reds and salmon grouper with lots of lingcod mixed in, the biggest (jackpot ling) going 22 pounds. This went on all day, and everyone on board ended up with heavy sacks of quality rock fish and sore arms.
We had a great time with a great group of people, and came home with a load of good eating fish. The food provided by Donna and the boat was excellent with Donna’s home made apple pie to top off our Saturday dinner. Mike in the galley even cooked up some of the vermillion rock fish for everyone on Saturday night, and I can’t wait to try his recipe this evening. Captain Ron, and the Constitution and her crew are top notch, and the guys on deck did a good job of keeping everybody rigged up and fishing. I highly recommend the Constitution and her Captain, and if you are interested, you can find contact information at: Constitution Sportfishing San Diego California Charters and trips

Fishing Sat. 11-07-09 with Mike Slater on his recently acquired 1986 48' Offshore, “Game Fisher” with crew Bill, Steve, Amelio and Fili, with our destination being the 238 and 295 area.

I drove down from work in San Bernardino at 3pm, arriving the border at 5pm, facing a line to get across that was three miles long, took 30 minutes to get across the border, arriving Ensenada at 6:45pm. Who says no one is going into Mexico? All workers commuting from TJ?

We left out of the Marina Corral at 4am, Sat. morning and picked up a scoop of mini mac's from the bait barge just inside the main harbor. Mike's old operation?

The ride out was comfortable in the big sea worthy craft, despite very large swells and heading up hill at about 13 knots. It was already capping at 5:30 am, about a 10-12 knot breeze, which backed off later in the day.

We arrived at the 238 high spot around 8am, after a few episodes of over heating on the starboard engine. Discovered it was primarily electrical issues with the gauges and not the engine. Both generators were also experiencing electrical issues. The boat has been sitting idle for several years in Long Beach, as the previous owner died, and the wife finally decided it was time to sell the boat, after being re-married. So Mike has his hands full for awhile to get every thing dialed in?

We trolled north and south and west of the 238. Water temps were ideal at 66.5 degrees. Color was blue and clear, however, not the real deep purple you would like. We caught one small skipjack after a few hours, then headed to the 295. Water temps only varied a half degree, primarily remaining in the 66.1 to 66.5 range. Despite an excellent view of the seas from the fly bridge, none of us spotted a kelp at either bank.

At 1pm, it was decided we needed something for dinner, and ran at 16.8 knots to the Todos Santos Island, and picked up some Lings and Reds and Boccaccio for tonight's meal. Called it a day at 4pm so we could be back in before dark.

The electrician “Ricardo” met us at the dock when we arrived. He had been working on some issues on Friday, when Mike also had to replace the raw water pump. Many relays and other electrical components were corroded with the prior years wear, and idleness. Fili and Amelio and I went into town to find some relays for the repair work, what an ordeal, but a success none the less after dealing with three different auto zone stores.

While Ricardo worked on the boat, we left for dinner, taking along the fish I had fileted. Amelio led us to a restaurant he particularly enjoyed. The streets were busy, however most of the eating places were dead, as was ours. They agreed to cook up our fish, as we waited and enjoyed some great Margaritas, chips and salsa, and cold beers.

The feast was served, the fish being cooked in a garlic butter and fried but not breaded, with beans, rice, more salsa, fried peppers and large green onions, flour, and corn tortillas. It was delicious, and we were all stuffed! $60 bucks for six of us, including drinks, wow!

Most of us crashed while Ricardo continued to work into the wee hours. When I awoke Sunday morning at 5am, all were still asleep, then Bill woke up to tell me we were land locked for the day. I took a shower and loaded up my gear for the long drive back to Diamond Bar. Leaving at 6:45 am, I took the Tecate route, arriving the border at 8:05 am, after stopping for fuel. With the conversion rate of 13 to 1 pesos for dollars, I calculated my fuel costs at under 2.50 a gallon. Not bad? Took 20 minutes to cross the border, with only one of the two stations open. Arrived home in time to make the 11 o'clock service at church with the wife.

Thanks again Mike for the invite, when the boat is dialed in you have a winner there, very fish able and comfortable. BTW- it has total walk around capability with no step up to a narrow footing, wide enough for two to pass each other, sweet!
Hook up!

I've gone out three times over the past week with small scores of tuna. Last Saturday we looked around the Hidden bank and ran into a couple schools of Albicore. We caught two on the troll and two on bait. There were a lot of skippy's hanging with them too. On Wednesday we headed out to the same area and caught two Albicore on the troll and one on bait. Finally yesterday (Saturday) we again headed out to the same area 10 miles north of the Hidden Bank and found a kelp holding yellowfin. We boated three on bait around 15lbs... They were boiling every where and then just took off. We had a good chunk line going and I metered the fish diving deep and then wham they swam off. The water temp in the area was 65.1 and as blue as it can be. About five miles to the East we found a scrap of kelp and baited two ten pound yellowtail. We were on the docks by 3pm with fresh Ahi and tail... The tuna are still hanging out there with the warm water pockets. I don't see them taking off until the water changes temp and color. Good Luck...
8 skipjack
4 Yellowtail

Water temp was 64.5 to 66 in the afternoon. Slick flat calm seas in the morning and just a little breeze later on. Sunny with some clouds. NO FOG.

Great day on the water! Saw some good signs for the next few days.

Only a couple boats out there and two that I talked to had Blue Fin Tuna and Albacore on board in the grey. (Believe FD has more detailed info)

My numbers were 58/14. Lot's of Skipjack in the area and still great signs of life!

Curious to see what happens on our weekend trip. Anyone interested in going, please call me.
Shawn, Brandon, Brett, great fishing with you all!!

Broke down and made the run down to the 60 MB and towards the Mushroom looking for some of the recent action posted lately. Couldn't make it happen for us. We made it to the 60 and headed as far as 32.00 / 118.21 trying. Only found the rat Yellowtail.

Talked to a boat named Notorious who was working the area. They found 1 Blue Fin Tuna on the troll last I talked to them. They had to head out early going back to Long Beach I think.

Talked to one other boater - didn't get name - they said they got some Blue Fin Tuna on a paddier around 02/11 (this is from memory but it is somewhat close). They had to run but gave us the numbers and we ran the 5 miles and to my amazement found the paddie. We worked it for half an hour or so and couldn't get it to go so headed back torwad Mission Bay at 20 knts and pulled in about 6:30. Found a few more dry paddies along the way.

Arrgh. I was really hoping to get that one last fish slaying in. Oh well, still beat the Hell out of being at work!
