Corny and a few others have had questions and comments on bar teaser and chasebait colors, in Corny's case, the lack of black and purple models being especially troubling. Understandable, as many believe that black and purple is among THE colors for tuna. And that's true, but only to a point - in my case the black part of the combo being what I believe to be the most important component of that combo and many others.

I explain what I believe as far as "black and's", NOT JUST DARK other colors that simply aren't the same, like dark red and dark green and so on, the reason why all small black and whatever other color it is combined with all being very effective colors in my books. And I am a long way from the only fisherman and indeed, lure manufacturer to think so. For instance, Moldcraft makes more trolling lures than any other company. And Frank Johnson, the Softhead lure creator, has clearly stated his opinion on this issue many times in print and in live seminars. When it comes to lure colors, his words are, "We make over four hundred color combinations, two for the fish - black and white - and the rest for the fisherman." Frank does that over a much wider product spread than we do and of course, he is far bigger than we are.

So, I am not alone when it comes to the importance of black. And all black lures or skirts and very definitely the hollow squids are rare as hell. Which is why I was so delighted to finally found all-black ones. It is also why we immediately switched from black and purple models to the all-black ones. So I'm the one to blame if anybody wants to know who the color culprit was.

And if anyone wants to know why we supply contrasting colored chasebaits on our bars, it is because having run them extensively both ways, with chasebaits that match the teasers and contrasting colored ones, I personally saw that the contrasting colored ones got bit more often. Obviously, that was because that one different colored chasebait made it even more of a clear target than its position behind the school did. Being able to test and observe that sort of thing day after day and year after year was a blessing and taught me many things that we have incorporated in our bars.

There is a simple solution to how we do this...just exchange the one colored chasebait to whatever color you prefer. It is ridiculously easy and takes mere seconds.

We switched over from the previous 4 1/4" models to the new models. We didn't want to mix suppliers any more than we already do, plus, if anybody thinks that there is some kind of a big difference between a 4 1/4" and a 4 3/4" squid when it comes to matching a hatch, all that I can say is, I'm glad that it's a good thing that tuna and other pelagics aren't THAT anal!

"The fish are in the details". Me, I believe that "The fish are in the basics." Those basics and the logic behind them are fully explained in The SuperBar Bible. But here's one of them...there ain't a single baitfish that I know that's black and purple. It's all about the gamefish being able to see the lure first. And black stands out against the sky, be it dark or lit up, the best of them all.

Now, we are a manufacturing business and cannot be all things to all people. That is especially so when it comes to offering a huge number of colors. So we offer the very best ones that we know of. However, if anyone still wants black and purple chasebaits, or even teasers on their bars, we can and will order some and accommodate them. This will disrupt our production, but we are willing to do this on this one color only if anyone feels that they have to have that color. Be aware that this might involve some additional lead time.

Now, please take a look at the following color and size comparisons before you decide that you just have to have black and purple and you tell me if you think that tuna differentiate between them while they are being trolled at six to ten knots.

If you do, you know what to do.

No, this is not a negative post about Archer Bars. But, it is something to be aware of and it is something that I'll be trying to figure out a cure for. Unless Captain Fred has already got one.

This is a 4.75" squid bar that I fished yesterday here on the East Cape for Sierra Mackerel. It worked very well! We caught a near limit of fish and did so during a mid-day outing, when most of the Sierra fishermen had already quit fishing (it's generally believed that they bite best at first light). But, as you can see in the photos, the bar is now a wounded veteran.

Having lost hooked wahoo in the past to it's brothers biting the lure after it had slid up the line, I guess I should have expected the same from their cousins the sierra. In fact, it may be a bigger problem with sierra, because they school in larger numbers than wahoo typically do.

So, any suggestions Capt. Fred? Or should just accept the fact that I'll be doing a lot of rigging in the future?

Also, do tuna shy away if you use wire on the chasebait, or have you not seen much of a difference?

I've looked at your online shop, but to be honest there seem to be a lot of choices on color combinations and sizes without enough suggestion on what to buy for a particular fishery. I would like to buy 1 archer bar of some kind to try when trolling on some of the long-range boats out of san diego and potentially a couple of chasebaits. Typically this is for Yellow Fin Tuna, Blue Fin Tuna, and potentially wahoo. I read that you recommend light and dark versions, but I don't know which colors match which chasebait best. Sooooo, can you recommend for trolling to or around alijos, guadalupe as well as mag bay:
A JT Special and a meatball bar took our only two strikes and caught both fish during a recent trip off the Windward coast of the island of Oahu. On that day our traditional Hawaiian lures didn't get a sniff. The seas were typical for that side of the island, running an easy 6-8 feet with an occasional 10-footer but thankfully the winds were lighter than normal so the seas were choppy but not consistently white-capped. The bars ran tangle-free all day even in those seas and pulled so lightly, even when pulled through those waves, that a single #64 rubber band sufficed to hold the lines down close to the water all day long.

The JT Special caught the mahi my buddy is holding in the picture below (taken after we got inside the Bay – we were rocking and rolling too much to take a photo outside) while the meatball caught an aku (skipjack). Given that the trolling around Oahu has been very slow lately, those Archer bars sure made our day, saving us from the dreaded whitewash! And the mahi was oh so delicious.

Below you will find an email I just received from Richard Gardner, a fishing tackle manufacturer who lives in Great Britain. He and his partner are hard core, true pros. I first met them at Cheeseburger/Cheeseburger down in Cabo while I was talking with another fleet owner who wanted to buy some SuperBars. I didn't sell them back then and politely explained that to her. As I did these guys came over to the table, asked politely if they could join me (Brits...polite, you know). I said sure and they sat down and we started talking about fishing in general and SuperBars in particular.

They explained that they leave England and come to Cabo every year, live there, and fish hard from early November until April or May or so. They have a small cruiser that I discovered was small in size only...it was fully pro rigged and loaded with great gear. I was impressed and when they asked me if I'd like to join them for a little fishing and maybe some "bar show & tell" later that day, I did something that I hardly ever did - I agreed to go on a fun trip.

We ran a bit offshore, then I put out four of the ProBars that we had been murdering the fish with (the fishing had been lousy otherwise). Long story short, we had multiple after multiple of the tunas. It was absolutely non-stop! Needless to say, we had a ball and they were such great guys, I left them a set of bars.

Here is what has happened since...

"Hi Fred. Great to hear from you - that day of the Yellowfin and introduction to SuperBars will live on in our minds forever...Quite a few people have seen them working on the Catch 22 - mostly it goes like this, "wow, is that a Christmas tree your clipping to the rod"(laugh/smirk!) - followed by "Well they run nice, funny 'cos I thought they would tangle" - later - "Jeez isn’t that the same Rod screaming off again?" Later still - "Have we run out of bars? Oh no, they are all in the fish hold with the Tuna?!" Converts are then referred to your good self via the Bloodydecks site. We see more of your bars every year in Cabo, not because of our efforts I hasten to add, but because THEY WORK and there are enough free thinking blokes about - not just us gringos either! Loved the pict of the 'Hoo on circle hook- Incidentally we have had good luck trolling a Mirrorlure 111 on 3 ft of 70 lb wire with a small 6 squid (no chase bait or hook) Bar clipped to the swivel above the wire. The plug runs as normal, perhaps 2 ft down, with the 6 squid on the surface above it! We run it short on a tight drag, cos it brings up the first Tunas most times, and then the other rods go off!

We had a couple of nice roosters last year 50lb or so. Spent a few days near Los Arcos when the other boats were after the Stripies, and - Sods Law - found a school of big ones late one day with only two baits left. Efren (a charter captain friend of theirs) was coming back from the Golden Gate and saw us releasing the second one - he told Jackie it was as big as myself -not sure if that's a big Rooster or a small Englishman!!

We use the same eagle claw non offset circle hook for the Roosters as the Marlin - changed from the Mustads 'cos of the longline connection - they are much safer on a fish that is very prone to Gut Hooking.

I saw the Film "End of the line" the other night, maybe aiming at the consumer will have more effect than fighting the big bent buck boys in government, hope so. I didn’t realize that mitsubishi (they don’t get a capital m from me) has a very big interest in longlining - they are even freezing down Bluefin long term for when stocks become extinct. That’s real scary. Nearly bought a mitsubishi car recently--bloody glad I didn't!!!

We fly into Cabo on 2nd nov and Jackie (Graciela Fleet) is collecting us and putting us up for the first week whilst we look for apartments - we don’t book - too un Mexican!!! We have Genuine English Soccer shirts for Efren and his brother. If you feel a little warm glow that Monday about 9pm, don’t worry, it's just a bunch of Brits, Yanks and Mexican fisher folk lifting a glass and talking about their missing Amigo. Cheers for now, Rick. (not to be confused with the Hurricane of the same name, which friends in Cabo delight in telling me started out Rampant but arrived in town somewhat "Limp" .Haa bloody Haa!!!"

We had dinner a couple of nights later...wahoo. I had gone out with one of my ex-captains who owned a panga and we fished one tide and caught four of them, including one over a buck. The whole crew from WON was there that night and I gave them a big old chunk of 'hoo too.

If you consider this spam, so be it. But what it really is, are the honest comments about our bars from some very good fishermen who have used them for a very long time and KNOW.
