After several weeks of strong easterlies and a brush with a tropical storm, the gulf laid flat like a pond, allowing for beautiful conditions. On Saturday I ran a trip for the Mexican Gulf Fishing Company. My crew consisted of a all star MLB line up that included hall of fame inductee Barry Larkin, formerly of the Cincinnati Reds. We rolled down the river at 50 m.p.h. and I never had to pull the throttles back once we hit the gulf. We started out wahoo fishing and only had a pull off to show for a serious effort. A capt. buddie hit me up on the radio that he had found some stud yellows and to get there quick. He was about fifteen miles away and in no time we pulled up to find his client bowed up in the harness. After a short lesson in chunking we picked up seven jumbo blackfin. We reset and started the process again and doubled up on two serious fish but broke one off in the pandemonium of trying to clear the lines as the fish crossed each other. The little 30w Tiagra was still screaming and we gave chase and was able to settle in with a straight up and down fight. Forty five minutes past by like five hours, add alot of grunts and groans and throw in a few select words and I sunk the gaffs in a nice fish in the 120-130lb class. We reset again and caught jumbo blacks on after the other keeping six more and releasing the rest. The guys called it a day early feeling satisfied and in the need of a cocktail. On Sunday the conditions were the same. I headed to the same area and we got started. Again, the blacks were thick. These are the 20-30lb jobs that eat anything thrown in the water. We fished into the early afternoon without seeing a yellow, when two studs appeared deep in the slick about 40ft down. They were playing hard to get eating everything without a hook. I downsized to 60lb Frenzy floro to try and get them to eat. We kept laying out the buffet when a nice cow dolphin showed up and we caught her quick. I kept feeding the tuna and finally the bigger of the two came right up and ate my chunk on que. I settled in and fought this fish while the guys were feeding two other tuna that came up on the other side of the boat. I am leaning on this fish hard when I look over and there is a wahoo in the 80lb class eating everything and lit up like a neon sign in the cobalt blue water. I yell for Capt. Mike to hook him. He ate the chunk as soon as it hit the water and streaked off on the surface for Mexico. The wahoo ate thru the floro after ten minutes which I was surprised it took that long. In the process Kevin hooked one of the other tuna and now we were doubled up on fatty's. Close to an hour later I finally had my tuna on its side and two gaffs later, a nice fish in the 140lb class hit the deck. I immediately focused my attention on Kevin's fish which was giving him a hard time. Another thirty minutes past and the circles got smaller and after an intense moment with a deep gaff we layed a nice fish in the 120lb class right next to his buddy in a bloody mess. Cool way to end the day indeed. The fishing here in Venice is strong right now as long as the weather permits. Starting in January it will go into full swing on large yellowfin and wahoo. I have dates available in December and the upcoming big fish season. Give me a call to book your next trip in Venice.

We flew into Louisiana Monday night about 8pm, right when Tropical storm Ida was making land fall. Unbelievably Soutwest airlines did not cancel our flight. We flew in right behind the storm.

Our flight was a little rough on the approach but other than that it was not to bad at all.

Sam did a priceline offer and got us a cheap hotel near downtown New Orleans. He offered $61 dollars for a 4 star hotel. I guess it was off season because the bid was accepted right away at the Pere Marquette a couple blocks away from Bourbon street. The room was pretty nice.

We were suppose to fish the next morning but the wind was gusting around 35 mph we opted to stay in town and do the tourist stuff.

Louisiana food:

Dragos in downtown was awesome. We took Greg there for dinner and ate some softshell crabs topped with some crab stuffing. The Charbroiled Oysters topped with cheese and garlic was legendary. Good times.

Crab stuffed lobster

The 2nd night we ate at Mulates. The food was not very good, salty, over cooked, service not so happening.

The 1st day of fishing we did good considering the wind was blowing over 20 knots. We caught plenty of redfish though on spin and fly.

Fishing on the 2nd day we only had a half day because we had to be at the airport around 5pm. Each morning Greg would pick us up from the hotel and take us to Penny's for a big breakfast and we would order soft shell po boys for lunch...both days the food kicked ass. Greg has the place wired.

The wind died off quite a bit but was still blowing around 15-20, we caught a few nice redfish on spin first thing in the morning then Sam and I would trade the bow catching nice reds on fly the rest of the day as Greg poled us in one bay after another.

Before it was time to pack it in and get to the airport I told Greg I would push him up the next bay. It didn’t take long to find a victim, at first I thought it was a decent redfish siting on the point. As Greg fired off a fly a giant tail hit the surface, he stripped it a couple times and a enormous Black Drum mouth engulfed his fly. I think Sam got the bite on video. The fish weighed a little over 40 pounds.

After landing Greg's fish we cracked open some cheap beer to wash down our Soft shell crab Po Boys and headed to the barn.

We stopped by Greg's house on the way to the airport for a quick "ho bath" and made the plane with plenty of time to spare.
Go figure a purple house...

LA airport was probally one of the easiest to clear I have ever been through.

Glad to be home with my family but I already miss Louisiana and ready to go back. All in all it is a very inexpensive trip and can be done with a pretty tight budget if you plan accordingly. I think our flight from Florida round trip was around 360.00 for both of us.

Here's Greg's info if you want to check out fishing with him Welcome to Flywater Expeditions also if you go here you can see his daily fishing reports. http://www.flywaterexpeditions.com/fishing-guide-news/

I managed to get back in time from my vacation to take one trip offshore in the flat calm waters we had for a couple days. I had Josh and his group in from Chattanooga, tn for a day trip for their first ever tuna trip. I told them after the trip if you want a repeat stay home cause they had a heckuva first time trip. We started off by catching a few blackfins. We saw a couple yfs but they wouldnt cooperate. For a couple hours we had quick as you can get in the water action on blackfins and bonitos. They were in a virtual feeding frenzy behind the boat. Around noon we had 17 blackfin in the box and we had released another half dozen more. We made one more drift and it ended up being the last after we had the gorrillas show up in the slick. About 5 minutes into that drift they showed up gliding through the water eating everything we threw in. I will never get it over watching the sickle fins of huge yf out of the water as they surf through my chum slick. I threw a bait in the water and one of them crushed it and we had a solid hookup on the 80w. We still had at least 2 more jumbos in the slick so I got a little greedy and threw out a 50 wide and got one to eat. I decided two jumbos at a time was enough so we let the rest of them live. After about a 30 minute fight on the 80 the first one was in the boat. The one on 50 was about 250 yards out on the surface at that point. since one was out the way we could actively chase down the long fish. Got on top of the 2nd one and it was mean. Of course having it on 80 pound leader instead of the heavy stuff made a difference as we couldnt put the heat on as much. About 45 minutes after we landed fish one I stuck fish number two and we heaved it in the boat to finish off my personal best double hookup. The tail of the tape is 176 and 185 for a combined weight of 361 pounds between 2 Yellow Fin Tuna.
www.cajunodysea.com

Captain Gray,

I wanted to thank you once again for the Best Offshore Experience of my life.

I have never ever had a Captain try so hard to meet my every desire, and that you did. In addition, I wish that I had invested in Shimano before you purchased your equipment, it looked like you had $50,000 in new rod and reels alone.

My original goal for the trip was to fight a Mako shark. Never would I expect would we bring up and play for thirty minutes with a 17 foot, over 1000 pound monster Mako. I have videos that I will send you under separate email. You letting us catch and fight and bring onboard a 500 pound hammerhead shark so that we could take good pictures was OVER THE TOP. And we got to release it back into the sea unharmed.

As offcatch, I additionally caught the largest Wahoo I had ever seen, the largest Amberjack I had ever caught, the largest King Mackerel I had ever seen, at least 10 blackfin sharks, 50 or more blackfin tuna, 50 or more Bonita in the process. (Did I mention that on my last outing with you I caught the 9th biggest Tripletail that has ever been caught in Louisiana)

We left the dock an hour before the other charters and returned an hour later. To add icing on the cake, your deck hand, One Eyed Ed, is a Captain himself and what a job he did. If only you had let him blind gaff the monster Mako, we either would have been the cock of the dock for years to come, or would have met our Maker that very day. That shark was almost worth the risk.

I have never before gone on a trip where the Captain was more excited about the trip and the catch than I was. I am a fanatic myself and you make me seem calm. I guess that is because you love to fish and do it because you want to.

Most other offshore trips I have been on, the Captain seemed like he was on autopilot, like driving a bus, wanting to make the daily catch and get back to the dock. They appeared to be there because that is what it took to make their boat payment and provide for their family. Rarely am I on trips where I am allowed to catch anything that I want to , be it a shark or AJ, especially if we were on a tuna trip or swordfish trip....

I can't say enough about what a special fishery that you have in Venice, Louisiana both inshore and offshore.

You can count on it, I will be back and soon. I want to catch my Mako, I want to experience the world class Wahoo bite in February and I want to catch one of those monster Swordfish. I would like to catch Yellowfin on topwater and with suspended baitfish over the top of the water with a kite.

Thank you for making this trip something that I will never forget.

I would be pleased to give you an unconditional reference and to talk to any prospective customer that you need me to.

It sure had been a long time! Some times you get in a rhythm with the weather and it is good on the days you are booked and sometimes you get it backwards which is where I’ve been for quite some time now, hopefully the trend is switching. Friday I had Chris Kelly and family/friends and after a year and a half of cancellations the weather finally cooperated for him. The fishing was great as well and with a boat of no longer tuna virgins I was glad to see it. It never was insanely fast but every time we hooked one fish we wound up doubling up. We ended the day with four big ones with the biggest going 148# and 128# and four small ones as well as three other big ones lost to a broken line and pulled hooks.

It really didn’t seem to matter what kind of bait you were using you just had to be in the right place at the right time. We caught fish on hardtails, mullet, and even on a little blackfin we caught on a butterfly jig. They weren’t being shy either with most fish biting 100# seguar fluorocarbon leader and 8/0 Mustad circle hooks.
This is the time of year when the tuna are typically a little larger with fish over 100# not uncommon throw in the wahoo that should be really starting to show as I’m typing this and you got the recipe for an unforgettable day of fishing.
The weather looks like its going to cooperate this week and we have some openings so give us a call to get out on the water.

I fished a couple of days last week offshore. Still using Capt hoops boat but hopefully mine will be ready soon. I had Mike Barrett and his dad plus a friend on sunday. WE started off in close catching a bunch of blacks on live bait and poppers. The only excitement in the morning was hooking up a white marlin on a frenzy popper. He gave us one jump before he threw the hooks. After that I rolled south to some deeper rigs and that was the ticket. As I was putting a live bait out Mike cast his popper and hooked up on a 100 pound yf right away. WE fought him about 30 minutes and put it in the box. Set back up and pretty soon doubled up with one on a livie and one on a popper. Both were quality 80 pound fish. That was the end of the topwater bite although we did put two more good fish in the boat on live bait. For a total of 5 yf. On an interesting note I was fishing one live bait with 60 flouro and one with 80 mono. All of the live bait bites were on 80 mono.

I fished on wed with Paul Groves and his friend Allen. We started off looking for the shrimpboats. There was only one problem as there werent any shrimpboats out there. Had to make a change to plan b now as we headed long to the floaters. Got out there and made some bait although it was difficult. The first fish in the boat was a 75 pound yf. We missed a couple bites and then added 2 more schoolies to the box. I was out of bait then so I started chumming and put another schoolie in the box. At this point I hadnt had a hit on flouro again so I switched both rods to 80 pound mono leader. I made some more bait and then reset the livies out and doubled up this time on straight mono to end up the day with a limit of 6 yf.

This past week was an interesting one…..as far as fishing. Weather played a HUGE factor on fishing as we had a very strong front that came through last week and along with it, came extreme winds. Winds were sustained at over 20 knots with gusts to 30, which obviously led to not even close to perfect conditions. Wed thru Fri was as tough as it gets. Still managed to find Reds, although we certainly had to try several spots till we found the right “spot”.

Friday afternoon Michael my oldest son, in from college, located a concentration of Reds that afforded two boats of non stop action. John Stone and Joey Peterson of Buffalo Rock Pepsi had a group of their clients at the Redfish Lodge and they wore them out Friday afternoon. Fish from 7-25 pounds were caught.

Sat with a total of 5 boats fishing and the first day with at least semi good weather, each boat hit different areas but all came back with fish. John, Joey and David fished with me and the first spot we pulled up to, it was on. We could see plenty of Reds with their backs and tails out of the water…..pretty cool site!!! First cast produced a triple strike…….two fish landed, one fish lost…..The action continued for at least three to four hours with many fish caught…….some lost…..several GIANTS were released with at least three to four over forty pounds released and many in the 20-35 pound range released. Along with the giants several upper end slots were kept for the grill.

Now an interesting occurrence, last 10 minutes of the day were spent casting into a large school of Reds that had their backs and tails out of the water, but after a barrage of baits were thrown at them, we left with our ego’s deflated as they refused everything we threw at them. Really strange……Any way it was pretty cool.

Last couple of days provided again, very good catches of Reds, with many GIANTS. Along with the Reds yesterday was also a very good day for Trout, as a limit was put on the boat along with the Reds.

Will be at it thru Sat so I will let you know what happens for the rest of the week

If you are looking to book an exciting trip for this fall or winter, as our winters really are quite nice……Give us a call and come enjoy some great hospitality, food, fun and fishing that Louisiana has to offer at the Redfish Lodge of Louisiana

It has been a while since our last post but we have been fishing on the days we can get out. The weather has been tough to handle lately to say the least. Some months your bookings happen to fall on the good weather days and some months they fall on the bad weather days. That is one of the tricky parts about being in this business. On the days that we have made it offshore the Tuna bite has been very good. The last Trip out was taken by Capt. Josh with the Johnston crew and they ended up with seven black fin and a nice 120lb. Yellow fin tuna. This was Mr. Johnstons third trip down and he has been trying to get one over a hundo, finally got him. The cobia finally showed up and we have been able to easily take advantage of them. The fishing will only continue to improve as we move into November and December. Hopefully the weather will cooperate because November is one of those months that you can catch a lot of big tuna and wahoo. We've got open dates in Nov., it would be best to book a couple of days during this time of the year just in case the weather does get you for one. If your a duck hunter you can bring your hunting gear along as well since duck season opens on Nov. 14th. If you were to get weathered out offshore you can get a duck hunt in.

Im out here in cajun land (Louisiana) for a month and on the hunt for some Alligator Gar I drove aroud the city scoping out new spots and happen to stumble upon a Canal in which noone fishes and is loaded with moster Gar Fish. These guys are no joke to catch It take about 10 hookups to land 1 and about 15-20 bites. The problem is not only hooking them since they have a jaw full of un penetrable bone and teeth the size of Crocodile teeth. Well I will let the pictures do the rest of the talking...

GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT?

Back to you guys again from Cajun Land,

Last week I caught a couple more and there was a weather change so the Gar went on Lockjaw. I have not been out for these suckers since last Thursday since the cold front, rain, wind, and more wind. Went to my original spot it was kinda slow I saw a local that lives down the street from the spot who is pretty much the only other person that fishes the spot. I asked him if he want to go explore with me so off we went to another spot I been eying. We cast out our gar rod and I proceeded to work my way down the Canal fishing for largemouth bass about 5 to 10 min into it I get hammered on my little 3 inch suspending Jerkbait. Started the battle with this sucker it pulled like crazy in it went, then out, in then stripping line down the bank so I kept walking down the bank following it. I yelled over to the local named Michael get the stick with the nuse! He comes running down the bank 15 min later and about 50 yards down the bank from where I originally started I put the nuse around his neck and dragged the sucker on the shore.

Largest fish I ever landed on a bass rod 5' 101/2'', weighed in right about 100lbs, on a Curado 300 DHSV, suffix 50lb braid, 20lb Stren Magnaflex mono, and a yozuri jerk bait.

All I got to say is Heck Yea!!!!!!!!!!!

Not the 7ft one I am hunting for but on my Curado!!! Man!
