I have been waiting a month for my escolar charter. These fish sort of look like white sea bass, yet they are darker, and have a glowing red eye.
These fish are deepwater fish found throughout the Pacific Ocean, and are sometimes caught off Mexico on 2 day plus trips.

I usually make two or three trips a year in the Fall, which is high season for these fish. I have made all my trips out of Shizuoka Prefecture, which is considered the "Mecca" of Escolar fishing.
My best to date is 81.4 pounds.

I heard of a boat to the South, in Wakayama Prefecture called the Yoyomaru, that has taken several escolar over the 100 pound mark, so I set up a charter.
Attachment 165787
Here is a pic of one that a customer on the Yoyomaru caught that went over 100 pounds and was over 6 feet long.

Attachment 165788
Seven of us boarded the boat in the afternoon; the plan was to fish for some Japanese yellowtail (very similar to the ones you get in California), and when it got dark, head for the 80 fathom curve to fish the escolar.

Attachment 165789
We set up on some hard bottom in relatively deep water, 50 fathom, and sent some live aji (Spanish mackerel). The captain recommended that we use a dropper loop-like rig, with 8 oz. of weight.

Nao connected first, with this edible species of shark that we opted to release. The weather started to kick up quite a bit, as you can see in the background of the pic.

Attachment 165790
Dori bagged the first mejiro (Japanese Yellowtail)

Attachment 165791

Things deteriorated really fast after that, weather wise. Dori bagged this weird red fish that looked similar to the green colored trumpet fish I have caught in Mexico.

We were taking green water over the bow as the sun set, and the captain made the wise decision to head back in.
We were in full slicker gear, yet still managed to get soaked on the way in.

Attachment 165792
When we arrived back at the dock, Yama-chan, who is a sushi chef, expertly cut up one of the yellowtail, and prepared "chirashi-sushi" for us, which is raw slices of fish, placed on sushi rice, along with nori, denbu, and egg. The captain joined us, and one of the yellows soon disappeared.

We are going to reschedule next month for the escolar, and it will be one of the last escolar trips of the year for the Yoyomaru, as they only fish them until the end of December each year.

Attachment 165326

Although you can not see the fish, the lake is clearly Casitas, specifically just outside Deadhorse, facing NW.

Attachment 165327
The fish here is secret, but the local is easily identified as DVL, right at the start of the dropping off of the launch ramp. They were kind enough to mark the end of the launch ramp with red cones; once your boat trailer wast past that point, you were stuck.
And, you had a twenty mile walk to the top of the launch ramp as well.

I'm sorry to have to do this, and while I will tell you exactly where I catch these trophy bass, and the pattern, time of day, right down to the lure I caught the fish on, I will not reveal the fish.

When I was 12 it was all about Kiss cards, now I’m 42 and it’s all about bass jigs.
At Noon I dropped anchor and switched to a big purple worm. I had got 7 bites on the worm, but only caught one more fish. They were deep in the sticks and still biting the worm when I had to leave at 2pm.
There were creatures a plenty, especially fat bass fishermen.
You should have been here tomorrow.

I waited all day for jig bite and never got one. BigClone was near. I saw her a catch a few on plastic worms. BigClone ignored his wife's calls all day. I was supposed to grill T-bones for everyone in my house tonight, but I forgot. My Aunt bought pizza instead and everyone is mad at me. I have a sunburn on my torso, head, and neck. I like sunburns. You cannot get a sunburn from the internet. My legs are taxed and I fell in a sink hole. You cannot get worn out legs and a wet foot by watching TV.

Today a dream came true. Words cannot describe the feeling of jubilation and euphoria that I felt when it came up the driveway. This dream came true in the form of a 2004 Boston Whaler Montauk 170. She's beautiful, she's sleek, and shes ready to take to the sea in pursuit of bass and beyond.

Shes fully rigged, with everything we need except a trolling motor. I bought her from a very close friend who gave us a good deal. She is in immaculate condition, and I intend to keep her that way.

Being the first boat over 15 feet (shes 17 feet) I've taken fishing by myself (I took her out over the summer), she has great sentimental value

Its time to gather the bassboyz and begin training. We're not ready yet, but hopefully with some time to get ready, we can become contenders. SWBA 2010, here we come.
