November 06, 2009

PROVINCETOWN — After a Nantucket sleigh ride off Race Point, Dave Lamoureux landed a 157-pound bluefin tuna yesterday — from his kayak.

"I fought it for about three hours," Lamoureux said. "It probably took another hour to paddle back in."

Lamoureux, a trader from Chicago and part-time Yarmouth resident, has been tilting at kayak fishing records since August. That means paddling a 12-foot-long hunk of plastic out into the open ocean and targeting tuna.

Why tempt fate and powerful fish? "I'm an adrenaline seeker," he said.

And tuna don't give up easy.

"It fights till it dies," said Lamoureux, who added that a tuna once towed him (and his kayak) more than five miles offshore.

"You go for a sleigh ride," Lamoureux said. "At high speed first, and then you slow down. It becomes a vertical fight after that, and then periodically it runs, you know, and you go with it."

He pulled the sea-beast to shore, then a boater helped him tow it to Fisherman's Wharf.

Lamoureux was aiming to beat the world record for unassisted paddle-out kayak fishing for any species, which he believed to be 187-pounds. The Cape Cod Times was unable to verify any official records by press deadline last night, but it was enough to impress Austin Proudfoot of the Goose Hummock Shop, the Orleans sporting goods store where the tuna was officially weighed.

"It's unheard of," Proudfoot said. "To harvest a fish of this size and quality, it really is a special thing."

Proudfoot said Lamoureaux landed the tuna using a seven-foot Van Staal rod and a Fin-Nor offshore reel, considered a heavy spin fishing combo.

"He's setting himself way, way far out of the crowd with what he's doing. It's great," Proudfoot said.

Lamoureux plans to eat the tuna, with help from friends, and perhaps some wasabi.

I've been wanting to fish a different part of the harbor and yesterday presented an opportunity to do so. I knew there was a big tide swing but I was still surprised when I showed up and found the water level so low. I trolled a deep water crank and shallow water/rattle crank for a couple hours before this little guy attacked the rattler. I was tight to the beach in shallow, dirty water when he hit.

I know he's way small but I was stoked because it's a new species for me on the yak and I haven't caught a butt in a while....

The rest of the day was uneventful until I landed and got a laugh at the crew girls freaking out about standing in the muddy muck that smelt like rotten eggs...haha....

I had planned to hit the water Friday but work issues had to be addressed, which meant Saturday was the day.

Launched around 12:30, with 2 hours left before the bottom of the low tide, so I still had some water movement to help with the fishing. Water had cooled (mid-60's), but nice green color, with a steady breeze out of the southwest, and the bay bass were hungry. I fished a crankbait exclusively and C&R'd 8 big healthy spotted bay bass; I found a nice underwater hill that the bass seemed hanging around and they pretty much hit the lure every time it went over the hill and proceeded to pull me around. Here are some pictures of two of the bass:

Attachment 163642

This bass swallowed the whole crankbait easily and took some effort removing the hooks while not harming the fishes gills;

Attachment 163643

I also caught and released smaller bay bass, so my total was 12 spotted bay bass. I would have fished some other areas, but I had to be out of the water by 2:30.

Very nice day on the water.

Well left the house around 8:15am :oh well: and headed to Seal Beach. Spent 20 minutes looking for a parking spot  . F-this i was saying and on my last circle a spot had opened up so i thought lets do this. As you all know i haven't been out for what seems like forever. I left the waders in the truck with beautiful sunshine conditions T-shirt and Swim shorts  .
I paddled out to a spot that i always fish and usually have good luck. After a few casts got this little sandy on the swim bait!!

Fished there for about 40 minutes and farmed a couple. Right before i was going to head out the rig i had a TJW deadsticked and it went bendo. This Sculpin hit the deck!!

Did i mention how nice of a day it was!!!!! I was sweating with my pfd on!!!!!

Water was ranging from 61' to 64 degrees with some small spots of what looks to be a red tide.
Got this Sandy next out at the rig working between lobster traps.

Once again i get hit hard on the Deadsticked TJW and this one is taking some drag. Fought for a couple minutes and brought this on the deck.

Went just over 19 1/2 but had some gerth.
The 2 weapons for the day

I went fishing yesterday at La Jolla looking for the bigger bonitos and yellows. Fishing was a little slow at first with lots of small bonitos in the 12” to 14” size. I was able to hook-up to a larger grade bonito, maybe 6 to 7 pounds. I was letting him play out a little bit before bringing him on board when a large brown male seal came over for an easy meal. I buttoned down the drag and put the heat to the bonito to get him on board with the seal in hot pursuit. Once the bonito was on board, the seal dove about 6 feet down, turned and came up just under my yak. He then bumped the bottom of the yak and rolled, flipping me out and yak over. I lost the bonito, rod-n-reel, and a couple of baits that I had not put back up. My buddy paddled over and helped picked the remaining stuff and get me back in the yak. :beerbang:This seal did this with ease as if he had done a few times before. We ended up with catching over twenty small bonitos and were able to bring one bigger one home. Besides loosing the rod-n-reel, it was a good day. Thanks again to my friend Mike for helping me out. Here is a pic of his bonito.
