Went out by myself on Wednesday the 18th with plans to hunt for the next 3 days. Got stopped padded down/ interviewed by Border Patrol (They had just caught a group of 7 and were wondering what my crazy ass was doing). Now am running a little late. By the time I got there it’s starting to clear, I spot a nice size Doe watched her for about 15 minutes hoping for the buck and nada… Sat there and glassed for about an 1hour..

Ok time to do my rounds and hit all my spots… Noon came around and it’s getting hot nothings moving am tired of glassing fucken Tim (Mergrath) keeps sending me chicks with dicks on my cell.. I replied telling him he was a Joto and that my tag soup was starting to look good…

So by this time my only option was to walk, stop and glass and hope to jump something. Climbed this big ass mountain and started to throw rocks into the bushes…. Well at around 2pm I found the right paddy holding this little buck and a Doe… They jumped at around 150 yards and started running away from me.. All I had was an ass shot and I took it… 1 shot one kill right in the chun chun :indabutt:

Now the fun part since my partner Omartish decided to switch and go to opposite days off, here I am with a deer down (Yes, I had a frame pack but it was in the jeep) in a perfect world or back when I, “had” a partner he would go get the frame and we would meet and done….

So, after the gutting and a few pics and texts I started the dragging game.. Made it to the jeep by 4:20 set up shop and cut it up and on my way home by 5:00, what a day… Time to start getting ready for the G6 hunt… Adios amigos!!!

I haven't been able to hunt the past couple of seasons for a variety of different reasons but I recently had an opportunity to hunt a family farm in Washington for whitetails. It was sort of a last minute deal. I just packed my hunting gear into a backpack and hopped on a plane. Didn't even bring my rifle as I planned to borrow my step-dad's.

The coolest part of the trip is that I got to hunt with my mom. Yep, my 60-something year old mother, grandma to my daughter, was decked out in camo and blaze orange and toted her .270 in the field. It was her first hunt ever and she was pumped up about it. It was pretty cool and weird all at the same time. Sitting on a stand in the fading light watching for deer while your mother is sitting next to you with a rifle in her hands was definitely a new one for me.

The bucks had definitely gone nocturnal when we were there, but we did end up with 2 does. I took a 160lb doe at about 225 yards with a borrowed .300 Win Mag. Nothing to brag about, but at least it's meat in the freezer. Mom didn't shoot anything, but she got to experience her first hunt, and she's definitely hooked for next year. She even helped to gut and skin the deer. This is a woman that raised me in Newport Beach. I still can't hardly believe it. :D

The farm was also overrun with turkeys and geese. We saw tons of each daily and could have had limits easily. Next year we'll plan the trip better so we can hit both seasons.

Also got to reunite with some family that I haven't seen in 30+ years. We stayed in the old farmhouse where my grandmother was raised and it was nice to come back in from the morning hunt and sit down next to the wood stove for a big, old-fashioned breakfast every morning. We got invited back for next year so all in all, I'm calling the trip a success. Hell, it was great just to be out in the woods again.

Don't have many pics since I didn't bring a camera.

Mergrath picked up a gun and shot a public land D16 deer!

Well here we go:

Most of you know that I spend pretty much all of time archery hunting. I haven't hunted more than 5 times with a rifle in my four years of hunting thus far. Personally, it's just a greater satisfaction due to the challenge for me. So, as gaytorfan stated "I ventured to the dark side". LOL

I archery hunted Thursday evening and was about 15 minutes shy of having a very big 3x3 within 20 yards. It didn't happen and my plans were to possibly hit the same area the next morning. However, srfnkill had taken Friday off of work due to the illness of his father and called saying his morning was open and wanted to hunt with me (he filled both of his tags early in the season...and it's killing the poor guy.) Obviously archery hunting with one person is hard enough alone and I don't share a treestand unlike some of you.

So we hit the hill Friday morning and are greeted with 39 degrees, a heavy wind, fog and light rain. We hiked the high desert and stopped and glassed for hours. We finnaly @ 10:00 am start glassing an east facing hillside and I immediately pick-up deer. This is the third time in my last four hunts that I've been able to glass up deer which is something that has me excited. There is deffinately two bucks @ 260 yards mixed in with a couple does. One is a spike and the other well...with the fog and wind it was almost impossible to determine if it was legal or not. We seriously glassed these bucks for over an hour! It was really hard to pass but we couldn't be sure so we did the appropriate thing. :(

I gave serious thought to returning to the same spot the next morning. Again, it's a tough decision for me but when srfnkill called and wanted to do another hunt, I couldn't resist. So, we head out and park in a much closer spot to hillside from the day before. As I'm putting my gloves on (26 degrees) my phone goes off...it's my wife texting me that her grandmother had just passed away @ 5:00 am. :( I reply back if she wanted me to come home and he she said no, just don't stay out all day. :notworthy

So, we head out and find a nice spot on the hillside adjacent from the hillside with the deer from the day before. As soon as there is a sliver of light I start glassin the ridgeline...deer...deer...deer...legal buck! So, I start getting my rifle all set-up on the sticks and get my crosshairs on him. I take a shot at 300 yards and I miss clean. The deer didn't even move! He just kept eating so I load another round and bam, he starts heading down the hill and zig-zagging a bit and goes down. We start high-fiving thinking this deal is done...not! :zelfmoord

We head up to recover the deer and can't find him anywhere...WTF? We start circling the spot and srfnkill picks up some blood as do I. We start tracking the deer heading south around the slope. Along the way I find a 1-1/2" piece of bone! All of the sudden I look up toward the ridge and see this little midget deer. (I kid you not...this deer is a midget!) I knew this midget deer was sticking close to the wounded buck so I head up. I get to about 10 yards and the buck jumps up and heads over the ridge torward the camping area.

I'm not sure how the laws apply here but I went after him. I get to the top and he's about half way down the other side. I put the rifle to my shoulder and bam, down he goes. We drag him to the bottom tag, drag, truck, freezer! Now, back to my archery hunting!

Jason was good enough to set us up with a few of his Dads old hunting buddies for a pheasant and dove hunt in the valley on saturday. Unfortunately his wife and daughter got really sick and he had to stay home with them. But in true BD fashion, we went without him. :D

Me, Tommy(aka Cornfed), Marcus(aka Odd Job), Corky (aka Cork Dog), Capt. Brian (aka Ray Charles) and Jeff (aka ???) all headed down to El Centro. We met up with the guys and headed to the field.

Cornfed was in from Washington for the weekend so we drug his big ass along to take pics. He got some great shots.

We had other hunters with permission to shoot the field and we all worked together (More of less) for about a 1 bird per average in that field. Then hit the ditches in search of chickens and added a couple more.

After that was over we went to a little piece of land with a house, some hay bales, old equipment and buildings for some great Euro and Morning Dove shooting. We pounded the crap out of them for a couple hours.

THen back to the pheasant field for one more push and one more bird. Back at the house by 5pm for the fight.

Great day in the field. We all had a blast and enjoyed some coldies together.

Check out the pics.

Had the #16 res and hunted the Y15 area, shot a spoonie, teal , and pintail in the first ten minutes and then DEAD after that, I left at 9:00 with my three ducks and the other 3 guys in my party left about 2:00 with a total of 5 or 6 ducks. Can't wait for a storm to push the birds down to get some good hunts in.

Hunted my secret spot last week with my buddy and we did quite a bit better with these greenheads enjoying the steel from my Super Black EagleII

Took my son and one of his scouting buddies down. He has never been hunting or fishing so I thought it would be good for him. He's one of those tough acting kids but he soon found out that shit don't fly around me. We had a blast. It's always nice to bring a youngster out for his firsts.

We didn't hunt too hard or long. They had more fun shooting tragets anyway.

My son says..."Hey Dad we should have shot this gun at the high flyers this morning.":) Notice the duck?

well i'll have to say i've had a good year so far. first , in sept. my buddy steve and i sponsored our first long range trip and we had a great trip we both landed Blue Fin Tuna,Yellow Fin Tuna, albacore and skipjack on the same trip. then in oct. i shot my first archery black bear. last, i shot a nice little whitetail deer yesterday evening .
first compound killed deer in 9 years. i dislocated my middle finger helping my son practice kicks and could not draw my long bow. i was hunting at my buddies place here in arkansas and the rut is just getting started. got in my stand and sat for about a hour and he entered the field with a couple doe's. i had to watch him a good 25-30 minutes before i could get a shot. judged him at 25 yards and centered the 20 and 30 yard pins on his chest and hit the trigger.
that's when the fun began. he was really about 35yards away and my shot a little low. he ran off with his front leg all jacked up and good blood coming from the wound. went to the barn and waited for my buddy. told him what happened and we agreed to wait a hour or so and take up the trail.
a hour later we take off for the field to find him. arrow was stuck in the ground and covered with blood. went about 20 yards and we find a good blood trail. start following it and looks like we should find him quickly. 100 yards,200 yards. 300 yards later and no deer. follow the trail across the road still no deer, just lots of blood. down the hill into the creek bottom, lots of blood ,still no deer. we look at each other and continue trailing him. up hill on the other side of the creek.same thing lots of blood. get up on top of the hill and follow the trail across the field and down the other side. find were he bedded down and tons of blood ,but no deer. find the trail again and he circles the hill and heads back up . still lots of sign but no deer. he crosses the field again and heads towards the creek bottom again. still leaving lots of sign but again ,no deer. started up the hill from the creek heading back the way we came from and there he is. a nice 8 point buck piled up in a thicket not a 100 yards from the road we crossed.
we drag him out to the road and my buddy goes for the 4 wheeler. i dress him out and i find that my arrow was a little low but still cut a hole in the bottom of his heart. i could not believe that this buck went that far, almost a half mile, with a hole in his heart.. i shot him at 5 pm and did not get back to the house till midnite. one of the toughest recoveries i've had had to make. the tired look on my face says it all.
i've been hunting pretty hard for a month and a half and i think i'm going to take a week off and spend some time at home with the family before i try to fill my other tags.

On our first duck hunt of the season my son Cory and I went to Kern on Saturday on a # 4 ressie and shot limits. After scouting the refuge Friday afternoon it became apparent that most of the birds were using free roam areas 2 and 2A and since 2A had not been hunted all season and they were only going to allow a total of 6 hunters in the unit, we chose to hunt 2A. We had 11 birds in the first hour and a half and then finished a few hours later. After a few pintail and a couple gads it became a spoonfest but Cory had fun and that is all that matters to me. In fact he did MOST of the shooting and I did ALL of the retrieving which was just fine with me. It was his first ever limit on ducks and he was stoked.

After checking our birds we were told that we did exceptionally well as the refuge on a whole shot a 2 bird average on their second half opener. After the first hour the birds became wary of calling and decoy spreads and realized quickly their two week reprieve from hunting was over.

Good times in the outdoors with the boy. Can't wait until our next hunt together.

So after putting a goat and deer in the freezer, get the call to hunt private in SoDak. 24 hr grind driving up there, so I think I'll stretch it out. Calls to the DFG's in Ut, WY and SD. Get the skinny on public lands hunting. Get into Ut and hunt a WMA below SLC. Bust, tho dogs got to see some Hares about as big as them:eyepoppin. Monday, up to Wy and get the numbers for a WMA that they do a release on, so hens are fair game. Limit in 65 minutes. Next it's up to SD and get sent to a WMA about 45 min off the freeway. Nice cover, noone around but lots of burrs that we're really messing w/ the hounds paws. 30 mph crosswind. Head back out, 2 rooters cross in front of us. Stop, jump out send the dogs in the direction the birds went. 1st flushes wild, but I drill him. drop him in a slough, but apparently didn't bust any legs. On the run, but the dogs chased him down. Now we go over to where the other lit. bring the dogs into the stiff wind, they zero in on him locked up right next to each other...too much for the bird and he blasts out of the grass at 15 yds. I don't want to tear him apart, so I let him get out. MISTAKE!!! He caught that wind and there was no way to catch up. He looked like 1 of those Olympic trap birds at Miramar. Missed him huge. Got back in the truck and hunted another WMA near Pierre. Beauty area, but not holding...very windy there also. Weds, hook up w/ my partner from Hou and his party who were hunting (tagging along) w/ a guide service there. They were doing drives thru corn. Dogs had never hunted the corn, but figured it out pretty quick. 1 guy sails a root into the corn. I take the dogs into find it. Enzo (orange collar) is on point in a little clearing inside the corn so I think he's pointing dead. Nope...a minute later Cammy (green collar) comes back w/ the rooter. Guy was pretty stoked, thought for sure he wouldn't get that one back. They did that a couple more times, me getting props for helping get their birds back. Those things are TOUGH!!! Head shot or break a wing and 2 legs is the only way to anchor them. I ended up w/ 2 that afternoon. Thurs, our party hunted away from the other group and we only picked up a handful. My shooting sucked!!! Next time it's skeet, modified. Was shooting mod/full...but there were so many close shots. Friday we hook back up w/ the guide service and hunt a bunch of different parcels. Some of these are preserves...tho I don't know how you tell. After each pass thru the preserve, they band all the birds. Those birds don't go against your limit of 3 wilds a day. Get to the end of 1 pass of corn, unload and a rooster busts out 5' from me. Reload, shoot, miss.:ashamed: ...a scenario often repeated. Next we go to hunt another stand of corn, but have to pass thru a food plot...prolly 25 birds come out of the corner...40' square. Pick one off in front of me, for once. Go thru the corn, dogs are all birdied up. My shooting sucks, so I pull out the camera. Enzo locks a bird down, Cammy backs. Got a picture of that, hen tho. Other side of corn is another food plot. We (12 of us) work slowly thru it. Young kid on my right and Enzo goes on point. Bring him up...tell him to go up next to Enzo and flush the bird. (I know it's not a false point, cuz I can see Enzo's eyebrows raised as he scans left/right w/o moving his head. Whoosh...up comes a root...kid dumps him. There were no other pointers working, so the guys were pretty stoked to see that happen. Cammy goes on point a while later, but it's a hen...then a root jumps out. Uh huh...I miss...god I suck!!! Did another couple passes thru corn and got a few more. I ended up w/ 6 that day, tho I shot more than a box of 3" #4's. I should have easily had 20 birds for 2 days.
Travelled around the area on the "Magic Pheasant Bus." Great way to get around...12/14 guys, 4 dogs and a shitload of pheasant in the back. They said it was a tought year since alot of the crop (corn/sunflower) hadn't been taken off. The bus belongs to Welcome to Pheasant Cove Outfitters! South Dakota Pheasant Hunting at its Finest!. Really a neat outfit...has ahella clubhouse, wife cooks everything...well run operation.
A week off, then 36B Coues in Az. Thx for listening!

I headed up with my buddy matt and my daughter to rifle hunt laguna on tuesday afternoon/wednesday morning. We turned onto the road into the burned area. We glassed at the top of the hill during sundown and saw a few does but no bucks. After sun down we headed further down the road with our high beams on. About 2-3 miles down the road there was a jogger wearing a green t-shirt and shorts. As he approached, we lowered our high beams.
This weirdo then stands right in front of our vehicle and attempts to write down our license plate like we were doing something illegal. When we asked him if there was a problem, he refused to talk and ran off like a scarred little fawn....kind of strange.
My buddy matt figured he went and called DFG tip to inform them that there are evil hunters in the forest.:supergay:
Anyways, we arrived at the top of our ridge a few miles later and went to sleep till the evening.
We woke up 30 mins before first light and headed to our glassing spot. We glassed religiously for 3 hours and saw a ton of does and a spike. No shooter bucks seen...oh well, i'll be back at it with my daughter this evening.

Don't need to post much, since you guys know how all my hunts end..... :(

Had to drive from San Clemente directly to the hunting grounds, so didn't get in the area till 2:30 or so (Tuesday evening).

Well, I saw my first BIG doe at 15 yards...... At the intersection of Pine Hills Rd. and Boulder Creek Rd, across from a house..... I drive down Boulder Creek, bitching, and go by that randomly parked tractor trailer parked on the left. Well, on the right is a little private driveway going into that oak grove, with a deer crossing sign on it by the road. Well, no shit, there is another nice doe, walking the driveway 30 yards from the deer crossing sign...

That was it. I got to the spot I thought would be really nice, and didn't see one fricken track. So, with an hour left, I head back to Eagle Peak to go for a walk in a meadow where I know there are at least some deer, and there's 2 trucks parked there. So, I just became the dreaded road hunter down Eagle Peak for the last 45 minutes or so. Saw a few other trucks along the way. Alot for a Tuesday evening.

Oh, and in keeping with my pattern of seeing deer during turkey season, and turkey during deer season, I almost ran over a flock of 8 hens or so......

Anyway, does anyone know when hell will freeze over? I'm trying to make sure I have a nice chest freezer at that time, as I believe that is when I will get my deer....... :o
