Fishfinder questions

I have a Lowrance X50 Ds ff on my boat.I have some questions: 1.While moving the ff picks up a bunch of fish near the top and when we stop they are gone.We have concluded that it it picking up the spray/wake form our engine.so my question is should this be happening? 2.it read the water temp as 3.3F which is obviously inaccurate, why is it doing this? and lastly 3. My ff never pick up any fish past like 50ft,is this because my ff is a piece of crap or what? Thanks for any help.

Re: Fishfinder questions

See if your FF has a suface clutter setting. Most do have a built in filter for this problem. Is your FF dual frequency? If so you can change the frequency to go deeper better.I forget which frqy if better for deep water. If all else fail's look online for a manual.

Re: Fishfinder questions

Not sure what the power is on that unit or how old it is. Sensitivity needs to be turned way up on low power units to read bottom and fish, also turn the fish ID OFF, learn to interpret arches, fish ID feature is for beginners. Try sensitivity between 85-90% or more, see if the botttom shows. I just replaced my Lowrance X48 (Dog meat). Not enough power or pixels on the screen. Not sure about the X50.

I just bought the Lowrance 510-c(color) its bad ass, you can buy at bass pro or cabelas for $499, or cabelas also offers the 515-c which is almost same unit except dual frequency and slightly higher power (watts). I opted not to get the dual frequency.

Good Luck.

(edit) 200hz is kinda standard for freshwater, both should work fine for freshwater.

Re: Fishfinder questions

New to the ff thing myself, I almost always use the 200 hz, 50hz is for much deeper water. Can you adjust the range? Get out the manual and read it cover to cover. I keep my manual on the boat and read when things are slow.
