simrad ap-14 have had some minor problems, eaisily fixed over the phone. interfaces with the gps awesome, it does frequent 120mi runs no prob. like any electronic device take it apart every so often and spray it out with some kind of water protection, the ap's build alot of heat and therefore water condenses to all the components, especially the drive motor. don't know what I ever did with out auto pilot.

I went with the RM 8002 SG1 but instead of using the RM rudder reference Reliable Marine installed something called a SmartStick made by Teleflex:

Teleflex Marine Teleflex Marine - SmartStick

SmartStick has no moving parts to breakdown and they make a Simrad and a RM version. AP is very responsive, pump is quiet, easy to use and I also bought the RM SmartController remote that allows me to steer from the tower!

They (RM)actually sent me one (smartstick) way back when this thread started. It was a prototype back then (not yet for sale) but it still had some dead spots in it, at least on the one I tested for them. Hopefully they worked out the kinks and got it right.

I have a Cetrek and have the linear rudder sensor too. Just replaced the inside potentiometer for $65 and sealed it in silicone. Same thing the first installer did some 10+ years ago. Might try that to solve your problem.
Just noticed you're in Lake Forest, me too.

Our Simrad lasted a few years. Going to find out if it's fixable or if we have to buy a new one this weekend. Damn thing has gone up from 1200 to 1600 bucks since we bought the first one. Greg's coming by with all his auto pilot knowledge to lend me a hand. Coming back from 105 miles down south a couple a weeks ago was murder. And to think we didn't even have one on Hanna for years.

Curtis..........

The boat Hanna..........

I was looking at the same AP when I thought I needed to replace my 20 year old Simrad AP200 DL.

After all the research, the TR was just too much money & felt it was for items that would never ever get used. Not to mention having to pay additional for a display and other accessories that come standard with all the other brands.

Not saying they are bad AP's but I don't feel they are worth the $$$$ they are asking for them. To out fit my boat with a TR was around $800- $1,000 more than all the other brands with comperable features and componets.

I was able to replace my rudder indicator for under $200 and that fixed my problem, or I probably would have purchased another Simrad.

Rotary and Simrad virtual feedback (or whatever the Raymarine equivalent is) owners this will bore you...But, anybody that has hydraulic steering autopilots out there tried the SmartStick system from Teleflex???....Any opinions?? I have an older, AP14H that works great, as long as the linear feedback units are functionial, which is ususally about 1.5 years from my experience, and at $280 a pop it's getting old replacing them.....

Here's a link to the teleflex feedback units http://www.teleflexmarine.com/docume...002_5_1110.pdf

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Thanks,

HT

My auto pilot works bitchin" It works by way of verbal command. I simply say " keep the fucking boat headed this direction while I get me another beer" and I somehow always end up where I wanted to go.
