Since nobody answered I will
I am sure you know that Humming Bird and I think Lowrance make them, I have heard that they are not really that great. I see you are in Idaho, they may however work better for shallow lakes, than they do in the big ocean.
The real side scans are Furuno and Wesmars (big boat stuff) and big money

Well we have the Hummingbird on our skiff and for what we do [inshore bass fishing]its badass. You never waste your time fishing the wrong side of the boat, you always know where the structure is.They are easy to read, priced right for a small skiff. We are looking to up grade to the bigger screen next year.

The humminbird/lowrance side-scan technology is very different from the Furuno searchlight scanning sonar. Unlike Furuno's, the side scan gives almost photographic resolution, but of structure, not fish (except maybe large, stationary fish), and it is relatively slow (too slow to be suitable for ocean fishing). Furuno's indicates structure, but not with much resolution. On the other hand, its relatively fast and is primarily used to find fish.

We use it for 15-65' mostly.I think its rated to 150'?We haven't tried that.It picks up bait balls very well and single kelp stringers, ribs of wreaks, very small stones etc.We slow down to 5-10 mph when we want to read,we have the transom mount transducer. It is not meant for a sportfisher but for a skiff fishing structure its hard to beat.We zero complaints about this unit,70 + trips this year and we would buy it again.

I bought a Humminbird Matrix 47 3D. Very impressed with the view of structure and fish. The 3D is good for 240' and the 2d is good for 1000'. Stilll using it for local lakes getting used to the thing and the boat. I could see it being useful to 200' in local kelp. It does give a great reprentation relative to the stern of the boat. It has six t-ducers to combine the view to make 3D. According to the specs and literature. Fun to watch the fish.
I hear all the time that, 'It doesn't go deep enough." Who fishes the bottom at the 302?
