Which Transducer

I am looking at the Garmin 545s. I fish the Coronado Islands to the Lajolla Kelp beds. I have a 18' openbow with an Inboard/outdrive. I was told for this boat a bronze threwhole was the way to go for saltwater fishing.

Any thoughts on a good transducer that will take advantage of this unit, one with water temp too ?

Transducer is the most important part, Buy the best one possible for your unit. Through hull is usually best with a fairing block. Mounting location is also important. The best fishfinder will be useless with a cheapo transducer, And the best transducer will be useless if mounted in the wrong place. Do your research before drilling a hole in your boat

Look at a B60 or B164. Both are flushmount thru hulls.

Check out the Airmar website,
They have the best transducer for the buck! I use the P66 and have had excellent results.

Transducer

I've got the 540s Garmin with the B60 transducer and I'm happy with it. You could pay a lot more and get a 1kW like the B164 but with the small screen on the 540 and 545 I doubt you would benefit much. If you want to avoid the trouble and expense of a thru-hull go with the transom mount B66, but if you're going to keep the boat awhile I recommend the thru-hull. I know the B60 and B66 have temp as well.
