Gulf of Panama w/pics

I fished the area 45 to 70 miles south of Panama City near Isla San Jose on August 2 and 3
with Captain Randy Rickson and John Shyne on one of their charter boats, a 58’ tricked-out
Hatteras. Popping was the best technique here as I caught a 45 lb. mullet snapper (pargo lisa)
on a GT as well as amberjack, bigeye trevally, dorado and pesky jack crevalle. The skies
got a little stormy but the sea remained relatively flat. Captain and crew were lots of fun
to fish with and I’m looking forward for a return match with some of the bigger models that
cut me off on the deep rocks. We didn’t exactly rough it with the big screen satellite TV,
air conditioning, great food and some serious GPS spots to work with. Randy owns the Great
Panamanian Charter Co. and partner John has Panama Yacht Tours and they can reserve boats
from pangas to their 100’ Brower.

Tony, loved the pix on all your posts. I've got the Extreme booked for a week in mid- February and your pix are making me crazy waiting for Feb to come around. I'll have to order some huge popping plugs. PR

Another amazing adventure with some serious fish catching. Must be so awesome seeing those fish blow-up on the poppers.

Re: Gulf of Panama w/pics

Well popping seems to be getting the most reaction and I would have to agree that once you see big fish tracking and exploding on your surface popper there is no going back! It is one exciting technique and is easy to learn and do. Todays high-tech tackle also makes it easier to be successful with large predators such as amberjack, roosterfish, cubera snapper, giant trevally, yellowfin tuna, etc. as the reels are lighter, stronger and you can pop all day and still pull hard. Every trip I lose more poppers to the boat crews than the fish!
