Re: panama fishing?????

I fished out of Cebaco Bay Sportfishing Club in Jan. '06, Feb. '06 and Feb. '07. It's a great setup with a 115' mothership anchored in a nice bay as well as some serious equipment including a 47' Buddy Davis, 31' Bertram and a couple of custom 28' center console pangas. They fish anything from marlin to roosterfish at all the top spots: Tuna Coast, Aguja Reef, Cebaco Bank, Hannibal Bank, Coiba-Jicaron-Jicarita Islands. They will troll live bait, pop or deep jig-whatever your style demands. It's a cool bunch of guys there. If you have a copy of the August 2006 edition of Marlin I have an in-depth article in it about Cebaco ("Panamanian Free-For-All").

Not to poach, but I have also fished the Coral Star (2 years ago), and recent reports haven't been so great. The mothership remains in good shape, but apparently to the detriment of the sportfishers. Operations were reported on many fronts to be marginal. I was sorry to hear this, as I had a great trip (catching a 212 Yellow Fin Tuna on bait and an 86 Yellow Fin Tuna on IGFA Fly after breaking off several that were bigger, plus pargo, roosters, sails marlin etc, all while fishing fly!!!) I wanted to take my kids back, but I'm reconsidering the Coral Star. Good news to the contrary would be welome! Thoughts or comments?

Re: panama fishing?????

My last trip on the Coral Star was January 23-February 2, 2007. All the sportfishing boats were running fine except for the old console (run by Capt. Kidd) which they always seem to be working on since it was part of the Coiba Explorer fleet. They also have two extra boats so there wasn't a problem.

Choosing between the Coral Star and Cebaco Bay would not be easy because they are both good choices. The difference would be cost, areas fished and the type of boats you prefer to fish on. For example, Cebaco is about 25 miles east of Coiba and they routinely fish the Aguja Reef and Tuna Coast spots but will make runs to the Hannibal Bank depending on the fishing conditions. The Coral Star mothership moves around from the Paridas-Montuosa-Coiba Island spots. You need to check their websites and compare details to make a determination. Personally I fish with both and each one offers something different than the other but the bottom line is I get some great fishing in.
