| Costa Rica Honeymoon Dorado and Roosters
Better late than never!
Zach and I spent our honeymoon in Costa Rica. Our one week stay was FULL of adventures...But the best was the fishing. We charted a boat out of Los Suenos for the full day, just the 2 of us.
Our goals: To get on our first billfish, to get my on my first Dorado and both of us on our first Rooster
This time of year billfish are hard to come by, the Dorado had been scarse inshore, but boats were picking up a few small ones. Roosters....No problem!
Arrived at the boat at 7:30am where we met out capt and 2 deckhands. The capt spoke english pretty well, but the deckies were pretty minimal. Headed out about 25-30 miles where we trolled around for some Dorado (My first) We had 2 strong hits but they didn't get hooked.
Then, it was GAME ON! Within the next 2 hours or so we had 7 good size Dorado on the boat. The first was caught by me was biggest, about 35-40 lb bull. The next by Zach and we went back and forth from there. Total count: Crystal 4 Dodo, Zach 3 Dodo, the first was the biggest of the trip but the others were very nice about 25-30lb! We came up on a floating tree where I also caught one Triple Tail in the mix of things.
Only in Costa Rica would we leave amazing fishing in seek of other adventures. We took a break and headed over to Tortuga Island. The boat dropped us off while the 3 crew stayed abord. Not much to see there unless you do a tour, so we headed back to the boat after an hour.
Our new mission: Roosters!
The crew tied up with some sabiki's and made bait....Not as much as we had hoped for, but enough to get the job done.
The Capt took us to his Rooster spot more inshore, right in front of hour hotel. Zach and I were stoaked, but we had no idea what we were in for.
Trolling around again with the rod in the crew's hands, we ask if we could do everything and hold the rods. The Dorado catching was a lot of hook and handing...Which was fine since we were using the outriggers, but now it was time for Zach and I to do the work!
Trolling, trolling, trolling.....Blah blah no action....
Then BAM! I'M BIT! Let it run a bit then give it a good set! Holy cow, there's no way I've got this on my own, my arms are already dead from the Dodos and the bruise on my stomach isn't helping (I hate using the rod belt). After about 30 seconds of play, I hand it off to Zach who cranks it in no problem!
It comes to the surface and the capt starts yelling "BIG ROOSER,BIG ROOSER!!!" Ahh, we have ourselves a rooster 63 inches long and about 55-60lbs. Hurry up snap our pics and get it back in the water. Mission accomplished : No seasickness, 7 Dorado, 1 Rooster and 1 needle fish thing...
We took a few filets to the hotel where the chef cooked it up for us, SO GOOD!
I'm sure I left out some details that Zach can add... We are working on the video, will post when it's ready!
Pura Vida!

Not too long for the Rooster. As soon as I handed to Zach, maybe 7 mins on 30lb test. We were really surprised when it came over the rail, it as much bigger than we thought it would be.
The pics don't really do any of the fish justice, I was too weak and tired out to hold anything up straight haha 3 weeks later, the bruise on my stomach is finally staring to fade now. I'm kinda sad to see it go
