I know you live there and have an investment to protect but it's a losing battle.

The internet has made real time exchange of info a reality and your aggressive stance defending the place can't change that.

Twenty years ago I made a decision not to move there/start an operation like yours and I've never regretted it for an instant.
$100 plane ride vs $25 plane ride...i'd gladly pay the extra $75 because i think the gringo owned flight is more likely a newer, safer and probably more expensive ride.

if you read my earlier posts you'd see that i don't necessarily think C.R.'s the place to be, but i wouldn't say that the gringos made it that way.

like the others said, Costa Rica's great for vacations and maybe the retiree life, but running a business and dealing with every day life is a real headache. there is a whole different mentality here and dealing with it can be very, very, very frustrating.

wow talk about some bitter ex-pats. If you want real info, look for it elsewhere. These guys either hate CR because they tried to live there and it didn't work out, or don't want more tourists down there.

I was lucky to move to Panama five years ago. I've fished the hot spots around the world including Costa Rica. CR may have more sailfish, but for blacks, blues and bottom dwellers there is no comparison to Panama. Panama is 20 years ago behind CR in development yet surprisingly years ahead in infrastructure and road construction and maintenance. Panama's new president, Ricardo Martinelli, seems to have taken the reins and already has made some very positive decisions regarding the future of Panama.

In the past month we have had four clients from Costa Rica who are anxious to move to Panama to leave behind the high cost-of-living and the escalating crime rate. You may want to check our blog and read the entry we did on a market basket of food costs here in David. It is still virgin fishing here as if you fish Ladrones, Montuosa and Hannibal Bank in a day you'd rarely see more than a dozen boats.

If you have any additional question you can email me at santiagodepanama@yahoo.com

If you guys choose to believe either of your choices instead of what I wrote go for it. I am not bitter about Costa Rica and I said it is a great place to visit which it is but it is a very difficult place to live. I had no ulterior motives for my post and I stand behind the truths I talked about in it. The shear numbers of people I saw turn around and leave the place after trying to live there tell it all. You can believe all the Costa Rican government propaganda about how green they are if you choose to also but all the concrete going up doesn't lie and is very hard to hide when they cut the trees down too. Good luck is all I can say.

I totally disagree. I've lived here for 5 years, and I love it. I will probably never return to the states, only to visit. I live near what some refer to as the shit hole Tamarindo. Playa Langosta the end of the road. I would say if it did'nt work out for you, you don't have the money, you don't know how to protect your house and goods, you are too trusting, never managed to speak Spanish, have no skills or moxie to make money, have a drug habit personality, etc. Really enjoyed my walk on the beach this morning, can't wait for high tide for a surf.

You can say anything you want about yourself but keep your accusations about me about me out of your posts since you don't know jack about me. Read the club rules.

bottom line is this, if i ever do leave the states, i just need a small place to get started. a small house, with a small lot, a truck and a small amt of capital. Not trying to get wealthy or live any dream on some foreign soil.

I keep to myself, not looking to mix it up. Just want to be left alone.

PLEASE GUYS, ITS JUST A MESSAGE BOARD, JUST A PLACE TO TYPE OUR THOUGHTs IN CYBER SPACE. Nothing in this thread worth fighting over.
