Re: My first project boat EVER

The number plate has been so damaged you can not read any of the numbers any more. Does the DMV just inspect this hull and issue new numbers? It has a Coast guard plaque also but that has been totally sun rot you cant read anything on it either. See pics attached.

Re: My first project boat EVER

You gotta bring it to the DMV, and they'll have a person go out with you to inspect it. Once they realize (in person) that the hull ID is unidentifyable, they should issue you a new title & registration. Make sure you bring it in the back of a truck, or on a trailer that is registered, so they don't ding you for unregistered trailer!

Gregors are welded boats and less likely to leak than a rivoted boat.

dude no way! a 25 would rip the transom right off that boat. i have a 12' alum and its top rating is a 10hp motor which is what i have and it scoots just fine. maybe you could push it with a 15hp but that is maxing out and it looks like an old hull so that could be dangerous. i'd recommend a bilge pump as well because all alum's i know leak a little bit. i would have sunk my boat 5 times by now if i didnt have one. i finally sealed mine up for the piece of mind. denek has the right idea on how to do this. good luck with the transformation!
p.s a hinged deck from the 2nd bench back from the bow is killer....it doubles as storage as well

Re: My first project boat EVER

Ive taken it out into a couple ponds before...one in Rincon and threw it in Canyon lake once with the trolling motor and it didnt leak one drop. I am going to replace the transom board before putting a motor on it. Speaking of which, I am looking for a decent 10 hp motor that will be reliable, so if you have one or know of anyone unloading one let me know. What can I expect to pay for a used running 10 hp?

Re: My first project boat EVER

Does anyone know what the max hp motor this transom is rated for and if it is around 10hp, is there a way to beef it up for something bigger?

Your boat should accomadate a 15-20 hp no problem! Replace the wood in the back and make sure the braces are put back and tightly secured. If it's welded, it should not leak, i.e. no rivets. Going to Coronado Island in a 12 footer takes really big balls and picking the right day! I do not have those type (balls) I just looked.

Make sure you have the safety kit and radio and cell phone in a ziplock bag and GPS/Fishfinder combo and go and give'm hell. If you don't have those type of balls, stop all activities for about 6 months and they will turn blue and swell and your ready to go! Lifevest would be really nice too!
