Need your advice about bait tank setup

Hey guys is it ok to mount my bait tank pump on the transom since I am afraid to drill a hole in the bottom of my ski boat. I am looking to sell it at some point so that I can buy something more sea worthy.

So the question is will it work if I mount a 600 gph pump on the trans. The tank is 15 gallons.
Thanks

Yep, it will work just fine - make sure you get a pump with the mounting bracket and pickup that will allow for flow when you're up on plane. I ran this setup on a couple aluminum boats that I didn't want to cut a hole in.

600 gph is a big pump for a 15 gallon tank - a 360 gph would be better. I'm running a 500 gph on my 22 gallon tank and depending on the condition of the bait I sometimes have to valve it down slightly.

Re: Need your advice about bait tank setup

Where are you going to mount the bait tank? Are you trying to avoid a thru hull intake? I had a boston whaler and mounted the tank and pump inside the "cockpit". From the pump we routed the hose to the transom. The hose was connected to a piece of PVC pipe mounted vertically on the transom. The PVC extended past the hull about 2-3" and was cut at a 45deg angle. This angle allowed us to fill the tank while on plane without the bait pump. This setup worked great for many years.

Yes agreed with the post above regarding 600gph on a 15gal tank. Having too much flow can kill the bait. I use maybe a 1100gph(maybe 800?) to supply water to one 35gal tank and a second 45gal tank. If we use one we have to throttle the flow down if we are using both tanks than we open up the valves.

Re: Need your advice about bait tank setup

Steve,
That was the concern what happens whe I am on plane. 360 gph is enough wow the guy at the parts department said anything less than 500 was bad.
Bill,
I am going to mount it on the swim step.

As Eric mentioned above, a piece of PVC cut at a 45 degree angle stuck down in the water will do the trick. Now that I think about it, I actually made my own with the above mentioned PVC and 2 high quality suction cups. I heated the PVC and flattened the sides to make it more hydrodynamic, attached the suction cups and was good to go. There are transom mounted pumps by companies like Kodiak but they require drilling small mounting holes.

Here is some pump size info...

Re: Need your advice about bait tank setup

Whats your battery situation like? If you like to fish with the engine off just make sure you have a backup battery to start the engine or monitor it. Good luck.

Re: Need your advice about bait tank setup

Bill,
I just recently brought a battery recharger that stores up to 5 hours or do you think I need a second battery. I would hate to get stuck out there.

Re: Need your advice about bait tank setup

works great if you can find some sort of a little scoop or something for when you are going fast. ive seen it a lot from some of the guys i fish with from the bait receivers, when you go fast it sometimes starts to cavitate

Re: Need your advice about bait tank setup

Anyone of you have one of these transom mount pickups on your boat. I was thinking of using one of these instead of the pvc. I just don't know where to get a bronze on like this one
