Coastalnightlights double square rated in at 760 lumens. Would be a just a night-light compared to KMAN promised 4000 lumens rated LED. My vote would be for back wiring. Such as Ocean Led amphibians A-12/pro and Coastalnightlights double square light.

Kman how many lumens do you think the amphibian pro is pushing out. Their ad mentions 75% brighter than the A-12, and you cant run them out of the water.

As for color I'll take a set of blue ones

I just finished installing 5 lights on a 38 blackfin, they were made by "Abyss" and they sound about like the product you are fabricating. Just a small hole the size of the cable is needed to drill and 4 small mounting screws. Cool product for sure, good luck with your venture!!

Kurt ~

Did you drill those below the waterline or above and then run the cable to the light? Just curious how most people are choosing to install these. I'm more so interested in small boat (Center Console) applications.

Talking white LEDs here, the A12 pro shows 1.8 amps at 12V. That's 21.6 watts. Figure 90% efficient driver and you get 19.44 watts. Figure 100 lumens/watt at power, and that's 1,944 lumens. Note these are optimistic assumptions.

It's all about the amps, and can you keep the fixtures cool. The A12 Pro shows 1.8 amps while the A12 shows 1 amp. There's your 75%. Without giving secrets away, mine will be as bright as hell and will be able to be run out of the water--though not on the trailer for any length of time without going into safe mode.

As for raising squid--I don't know. I'd say buy my squid lights! They draw between 3.5 and 14 amps and will blow the doors off these transom lights. I have a 54-LED squid light here now (half white, half green) that I'll let go for $600. They are switchable high/low, white/green and retina-burning all.

Oh, I don't do deck lights anymore. Hella makes some nice ones though. I'm getting ready to redo the Trailer Trash's lighting with warm white LEDs. It'll be nice to see colors again.

Kman

PS This is not a business venture. I just like to make stuff. Selling off the stuff I make allows me to make even more stuff.

Hey Mike, I mounted them below the waterline and the only thru hole that is needed is the cable that is preconnected in the light. That wire is then connected to a voltage regulator and then wired to the switch. The lights have small channels in the bases that the water flows through to keep the lights from heating up. A very small amount of 5200 is all that is needed at the time of mounting and it was a very quick and easy process. They would work great on a center console and i would even think of installing them on mine except that if the economy doesn't get any better I'm going to give the boat away and get a real job. things suck down here. ( I am booked for the next 8 days though)

Kurt (KMan), gave me and travis a demonstration of his lights in his garage, when we went to buy his leadheads.

Those LED's ARE BRIGHT! I think I got sunburned. These things are amazing

Right now they are just acrylic prototypes. I'm waiting for some programmable gizmos to incorporate into the drive electronics to make the lights self throttling as they heat up, e.g., for when you get underway or fire them up on the trailer (they make fantastic backup lights!) and forget to turn them off.

Edit: The gizmos arrived Wednesday. I made circuit boards for them and they are cycling a couple LED lights right now. They have over a thousand off/on cycles on them now, and everything is running fine. One step closer...

Just finished waterproofing two lights--one with optics, and another without. They (and others) have also run a couple thousand heat cycles now without incident, so I'm confident they won't roast the gelcoat off your transom.

Concurrent with that is I'm putting the finishing touches on another monster above-water switchable bicolor squid light with 54 LEDs.

Next thing to do is to put sacrificial mounting plates on my transom so I can screw multiple lights to it without actually putting holes in the boat. One of those plates will need to be fitted with a test rig, so I can mount through-the-back wired lights.

Should have on-the-water pics by the weekend.
