| What size hull for my engine? Hey guys…..I bought a new tohatsu 90hp oil injected engine 2 years ago and put it on a 20ft valco westcoaster. The boat is overpowered and not the ride I had expected….bumpy and wet as hell. I have been thinking about removing it and going with fiberglass but I have no idea how big I can go with the hull. Any thoughts?

I run a 90 hp 2-stroke Yamaha on my 17' Invader - it does well but I sometimes want more power.

It all depends on the weight of the boat. You could go a foot or two bigger if you stay with the basic skiff in aluminum, or a stitch-and-glue wood composite like the Tolman. In fiberglass, you'll likely have to drop back down to 16' - 18' range...again, depending on weight.

You could buy another 90 and run twins on a 21'er

Pangas can run on less hp.
A 23' er with a 75 will do 20 kts.
Designed for less hp. Narrow and Long, very efficient.
I think that panga and the 90 would be sick.

Thanks Todd. Keep you posted. I'm still toying with the idea of twins on a bigger hull...but $$$.

With planing hulls, it’s all about weight. Weight is by far the most important factor in performance, far outweighing hull design or anything else. Here’s a rule of thumb for calculating horsepower requirements, originally published by the National Boating Trade Association. The ideal is 25 pounds of total boat weight (hull, motor, gear, fuel, bait tank and water, occupants…everything) for every 1 horsepower, and a maximum or 40 pounds for every 1 horsepower. Hope this helps.

I agree with the guys recommending a panga. A 90 is perfect for a 22', I've got a 90 Suzuki on mine and it is fast and very economical.
